Determining my anki version

Hello. I’m a newbie to Anki and not very computer savvy in general. I’m trying to determine the version I’m using so I know which version of an add-on to install.

When I go to “About Anki” I see this:

But looking at the supported Anki versions for the add-on I see this:

I feel I must be missing something pretty obvious.

Did you try installing the addon by yourself? If it works without issues, it works without issues. Often times this is not the case for other addons

For example, this addon: Review Heatmap, still didn’t get an update for the latest version of Anki but still working in the latest version.

It will depend on addon-to-addon

The version numbering changed! The versions you see there are – 2.1.20 → 2.1.65 . Then it switched to year and month of release – YY.MM – starting with 23.10 (2023 October). You have 24.06 (2024 June) – the most recent release.

Whether that add-on will be compatible or not depends a lot on what it is trying to do.

I was hesitant to just start trying stuff. This will be my first add-on. It’s the “Straight Reward” add-on.

I’ll try the most recent version and report back.

EDIT: I’m a dope. There’s one code for all the versions… I was thinking that I had to figure out WHICH version and go from there.

I have a lot of experience with that one! I can tell you that Straight Reward probably still sort of works, but it doesn’t do everything it says it does anymore (it doesn’t make any changes to cards from other devices after syncing).

But handily enough, it’s now also completely unnecessary! Since you’re just starting, you should turn on the FSRS scheduling algorithm without any hesitation, and that makes Straight Reward meaningless.

To turn on FSRS: Go to Deck Options > FSRS, flip the switch on. Turning it on in one place turns it on for your entire collection. In a couple months, if you’re curious, you can learn more about it, but that’s not necessary now.

Thank you for letting me know. I had the FSRS on, but I felt like the intervals were getting too big too fast. I think I might be pressing easy too much though.

I was trying to learn about “ease hell” and I admit I got really confused. Some people seem to say never hit “easy” and others say pressing “good” without hitting easy doesn’t make up for what hitting “again” and “hard” does.

For now, any recommendations?

That’s an easy mistake! Behind the scenes, Anki will choose a specific version of the add-on if it needs to, depending on which version of the app you’re using.

If you want a good “first add-on” to try – go with Review Heatmap. It doesn’t do much but look pretty!

Easy should be reserved for rare cases where it was exceptionally easy to answer – Studying - Anki Manual .

“Ease hell” is a very scary sounding term for something that wasn’t all that serious, but that folks would get very agitated about. All of that is gone now with FSRS.

Get into the habit of grading your answers honestly and accurately and be as consistent as you can about why you choose a particular grade. If you get it wrong – the only grade is Again. If you get it right, it’s always safe to grade it Good. In time you’ll get a sense for what rates as Hard or Easy to you.

Thanks so much. I’ll do as you suggest with the grading for the next little while. I’ll also download the one you recommend (pretty is always motivating!) and then spend some time with the basics before trying to get fancier.

(I am not a very good student. It’s always tempting to think that with a better tool I’ll have better results…but nothing beats just plain old work.)

No, you grow with the tools you have either way.

Don’t worry if you make mistakes on Anki as long you research and ask questions. I’d definitely recommend to look around the program and have fun with it.

It feels like there’s so much to learn and not enough time. I need to remember to have fun with these things!

You brightened up my day by answering my questions and giving me some suggestions. I hope the rest of your day goes well!

It’s normal to have large initial intervals with FSRS, especially if the material is easy. Don’t worry about it.
