Correct Apple Screen Time Category [MacOS & iOS]

Hi,

I am using Anki on MacOS as well as IOS and IpadOS devices.
A good tool to reflect your productivity is the built in screen-time system.

But Anki is listed under “others”. It would be beautiful to change that to the “productivity and finance” category, which can only be edited in the app metadata by developers.

Thanks, love this project

I don’t use Apple, but is there an education category? Asking because play store on Android has that and that feels more appropriate than the productivity category.

edit: sorta misunderstood the original request, I thought you were talking about the categories in app store.

Yess, that’s a great idea.
Education would be even a better choice for category in “Website and App activities” of screen time then Productivity in finance.

AnkiMobile is already categorized as “Education” in the App Store – and a bit of searching tells me that categorization carries over directly and dictates the “Screen Time” category for iOS apps. Are you seeing something different?

Take a look at thus screenshot:

I am experiencing this on IOS but also on my Mac.

Is this different on your devices?

Well, that’s interesting. Mine is categorized correctly.

[Using Anki 25.02.2 on iOS 16.7.11.]

Yeah, you are right. the iOS app is also in Education for me.

But this is the macOS Version. can you check that as well?

So now we found two new goals:

  1. Correct ScreenTime-category of macOS Anki to “education”
  2. Combine the screen time readings from Anki IOS and Mac, like other apps are able to

What do you think?

I don’t have access to a Mac, so we’ll have to leave that up to a developer.

It seems like that is technically possible for non-App Store apps through the “Information Property List” [perhaps by setting LSApplicationCategoryType to public.app-category.education?]. But I don’t know if that is actually more complicated or far reaching under the surface.

I’m haven’t been able to confirm whether that’s possible since they aren’t just the iOS and MacOS version of the same app – they are 2 separate apps.

So I’ll let the devs respond about whether each of these can/should be done.

[I’ll move this over to Anki > Help.]

I’ll try updating the category for macOS, but I can’t currently see any time being recorded - it’s possible that the new launcher in beta is breaking macOS’s usual recording.

Hi,
that sounds great.
I can provide you a screenshot from the time recording on macOS.
It correctly records the time for Anki but the category is just “others”.

you’re probably on an earlier version of the app

Nope
25.02.7

I’m referring to the current beta version.

Thanks for the hint to the beta version.
I looked through the compare changelog to the current released version and did not find a change to the screen time property.

Did you see sth or have a device where it is working?

I think you misunderstood — the category is not fixed but will be. But before that, another breakage needs to be fixed: macOS isn’t recording screen time properly for latest beta version.

ahhh sorry, for the misunderstanding.

That makes a lot of sense

Thank you so much for taking care of that and have a great day.
