Cards for language learning

Hi, I’m brand new here so please assume no knowledge!
I’ve just subscribed for a year and using the mobile app on iPad.
I’m wanting to set up a deck for language learning (Russian), so that I can test myself from the English side of the card OR the russian side. I don’t want to have to create 2 separate decks. Is this possible?
Thanks

Yes, that’s all possible in the legitimate versions of Anki – but none of those offers a subscription.

It sounds like you’ve got one of the knock-offs – Anki knockoffs - Anki FAQs . Hopefully you can get a refund and get started in the right app.

Get familiar with what notes and cards are in Getting Started – then you’ll understand more about how you’ll to 2 cards from the same note, and study the English-front cards and the Russian-front cards.

What did you mean by “paid for 1 year”? I think you downloaded the wrong Anki, because for iPhone the payment is a one-time thing.

Anki for iPhone is called Ankimobile, check if that’s the one you downloaded.

Answering your question: yes, you just need to choose the basic and inverted note type.
That way you create a card that’s valid for both sides.

Creating cards with two sides is really easy. Look in the instructions for details on Reversed cards. See my Latin Vocab deck as an example.

For language learning, I use cards with whole example sentences. The note has 3 fields:

  • Sentence (in language I am learning)
  • Translation (in my native language)
  • Audio (generated by TTS)

And I am using 3 card types:

  • Audio → Sentence + Translation
  • Sentence → Translation + Audio
  • Translation → Sentence + Audio

In my language study, I concentrate on listening and speaking. I do not practice writing at all.
