Cannot download Anki: "connection to github.com was refused"

Whenever I click on the Windows link and the link for previous versions, the site doesn’t open. I’ve had Anki since 2024, but I had to reformat my computer and now I can’t install it anymore; it says “the connection to github.com was refused.”

I appreciate any help!

Hi,
Have you tried if you can successfully access to github?

I moved your post out of the AnkiDroid category, because you seem to be asking about desktop Anki. What link are you using?

You can find links to all of the current versions of Anki on our main site – https://apps.ankiweb.net/#downloads . The direct link to the most recent release for Windows is https://github.com/ankitects/anki/releases/download/25.09/anki-launcher-25.09-windows.exe . And the link to the releases page is https://github.com/ankitects/anki/releases .

I tried, but it keeps giving the same problem

I used these links, but the problem is when I go to GitHub

Not being able to reach GitHub appears to be the root of the issue, and I don’t think we have a way around that for you. If your ISP or device won’t connect to GitHub at all it seems like there must be a reason – possibly related to regional internet restrictions, or an overprotective device?

i have the same problem and it seems the only way to get around it is by using a vpn. but after i downloaded the launcher, another problem occurs there

I used a VPN, downloaded the installer, tried to open and got this window:

Anki Launcher

  1. Latest Anki (press Enter)

  2. Choose a version

  3. Allow betas: off

  4. Cache downloads: on

  5. Download mirror: off

  6. Uninstall

Yes, that’s the launcher. As it says – press Enter to start installing Anki.

I ran it as admin and it worked – thank you.
