Bold text (<b> tag) not showing in AnkiDroid

I am experiencing an issue where bold text is not displayed correctly in the mobile version of the AnkiDroid.

The tag is correctly inserted in the note editor, and the text appears bold on the desktop version. However, it does not show up as bold on my mobile device.

I have already tried the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Confirmed that there are no CSS styles disabling the bold attribute (e.g., font-weight: normal;).
  • Restarted the app and my device.
  • Checked for app updates and confirmed I am on the latest version.
  • Switched the app’s theme (e.g., from light mode to dark mode).

Other formatting tags, such as the underline tag (), are working correctly. The issue seems to be specific to bold formatting.

Can you share a note with this problem here?

As you can see in the photo, the tag isn’t working correctly in the mobile app. It was showing up as bold just yesterday.

I was thinking you would select a note in the browser and export it as an .apkg file. Then zip it and share it here. Alternatively, go to the template editor → 3 dot menu → Copy as Markdown and paste it here.

Btw, maybe this is related to this recent reddit post?

(PS I corrected your title from Anki mobile to AnkiDroid, I hope you don’t mind)

Thank you for you reply. I’ve exported the file as an .apkg.

I believe my issue is the same as the one in that Reddit post. Unfortunately, it seems the user there hasn’t found a solution yet.

I just noticed something else: numbers and English alphabet letters appear in bold, but Japanese characters do not.

The category is AnkiDroid.

Weird, it works fine for me. The note type is basic so there’s definitely no template problem here.

Try downloading the latest alpha release here https://github.com/ankidroid/Anki-Android/releases/download/v2.23.0alpha4/AnkiDroid-2.23.0alpha4.parallel.A.apk. It will be installed as a a copy of AnkiDroid so it won’t affect your normal collection.

Also try enabling the new study screen in the alpha release.

Oh, and go to settings → about → copy debug info and paste it here inside a code block.

It displays correctly on your screen.

I downloaded the alpha version and tried creating a new note and syncing the same deck, but the issue still hasn’t been resolved.

Here is the debug info:
AnkiDroid Version = 2.23.0alpha4 (fb3fadbdebac9b191096a739e730d47ad9f6db09) Backend Version = 0.1.61-anki25.09 (25.09 539054c34dccf8b89ca7ea9c9c40ecaf172de759) Android Version = 14 (SDK 34) ProductFlavor = full Device Info = Google | google | akita | akita | Pixel 8a | akita Webview User Agent = Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 14; Pixel 8a Build/AP2A.240905.003.A1; wv) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Chrome/140.0.7339.51 Mobile Safari/537.36 ACRA UUID = f8ab42e1-cdcc-43db-af4b-7652658fe4a8 FSRS = 5.1.0 (Enabled: false) Crash Reports Enabled = true

There is now an issue on GitHub about this.

Thank you. It’s a relief to know that others are experiencing the same bug.
I’ll keep an eye on the GitHub issue, hoping for a fix.
