Big difference in retention rate between separate decks

hi everyone,

I am working with four different decks and they’re all foreign language vocabulary, English (I’m a French native speaker), Spanish, Russian and Mandarin.
the retention rate for the four decks is as follows :
English 96%
Spanish 95%
Russian 91% (but it’s a very small deck)
Mandarin 87%

my overall desired retention rate is 90%.and my true retention rate is 94% (the English and Spanish decks are much bigger than the Mandarin deck).

is FSRS taking into account the decks separately, or the cards themselves to calculate the review intervals that fit my brain the best ?

I fear that my good retention rate in English and Spanish (where the review intervals should grow bigger and bigger to bring the true retention rate closer to my desired retention rate) will interfere with my Mandarin deck where I’m not so good.

is that the case or is everything fine even when the discrepancy between separate decks is quite big ?

do I need to do something ?

thank you !

FSRS uses the settings preset, not the card decks. So if you have multiple decks with the same settings preset FSRS will use all of those decks to calculate the parameters etc.

I would clone your current preset so each language has a separate settings preset, then re-optimize the parameters for each preset.

thanks for your answer. can you tell me how I can do that ? I have no idea what cloning is (except for sheep)

To duplicate a preset, go to one of your decks settings page and click here for as many presets as you want:

I name my presets the same as my deck so its easy to organize.

After duplicating, remember to go to each deck change it to the new settings preset, then optimize.

thanks, I’ll try do that later today

If you have subdecks, you’ll need to make sure you apply the preset changes to those as well, or they won’t be included in the right optimization.

Try “Save to all Subdecks” if appropriate. Deck Options - Anki Manual
