I’ve had a couple of decks synched between AnkiDroid and AnkiWeb. I’ve now deleted the decks from AnkiWeb and keep them local on AnkiDroid. Are the AnkiWeb decks permanently deleted from the server when I choose delete in AnkiWeb? If not, how can I permanently delete them?
If you are syncing between AnkiDroid and AnkiWeb, there’s no way to have decks deleted on AnkiWeb and keep them locally available in your collection on AnkiDroid. If you sync, that deletion will sync too, so that your collection matches across all platforms.
I don’t want that necessarily. I am just wondering if the decks become permanently deleted from the server and that they are not on some back up somewhere.
people with access to those backups would no better than me. from what I know, the very old backups would get deleted. as long as you don’t have any sensitive/private data, there’s not much to worry about though.
that’s honestly great. ankiweb doesn’t really encrypt anything so you’re trusting the site owner for anything you upload there. but you can ofc backup using the custom-sync-server.
Perhaps it goes without saying, but having un-synced versions of your collection on multiple devices is not recommended. If they aren’t updating each other with review history and edits, they will quickly diverge. It also means that you don’t have an off-device backup of either version.
Server-side backups of collections on AnkiWeb are made periodically, and kept for about a month before being automatically discarded. If your account is inactive for 6 months, all of your data will be deleted. If you want your data deleted faster, you can delete your account yourself. See the AnkiWeb Privacy Policy if you have more concerns about that. https://ankiweb.net/account/privacy .
Your account is only a few days old, so it’s possible that the data you deleted hasn’t even been captured by a server-side backup yet.
