Anki Download Issue – invalid peer certificate: UnknownIssuer

Hi All,

I am new to Anki and am trying to download it to my Windows desktop. Having clicked to download through the website and install it to the default location on my computer, I get the following message:

“1) Latest Anki (press Enter)

  1. Choose a version

  2. Allow betas: off

  3. Cache downloads: on

  4. Download mirror: off

  5. Uninstall”

If I then click ‘Enter’, I get the following message:

“Checking for updates…
Unable to check for Anki versions. Please check your internet connection.

Error: Failed to run (2): C:\Users\pnavein\AppData\Local\Programs\Anki\uv.exe run --no-project --no-config --managed-python --with pip-system-certs,requests[socks] --python 3.13.5 C:\Users\pnavein\AppData\Local\Programs\Anki\versions.py: error: Failed to download https://github.com/astral-sh/python-build-standalone/releases/download/20250612/cpython-3.13.5%2B20250612-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc-install_only_stripped.tar.gz

Caused by: client error (Connect)
Caused by: invalid peer certificate: UnknownIssuer

Press enter to close…”

On pressing Enter again, the screen closes. I get the same issue if I type 1 or 2.

The Anki star icon is on my computer, but if I click into it then I just get taken to the same screen and the same issue pops up.

I have tried restarting my computer, uninstalling/reinstalling Anki and disabling my VPN, but I get the same issue each time. My internet appears to be working fine.

Any help/guidance would be really really appreciated.

Thanks!

There are other people experiencing issues with the new installer. Try this version for now: Release 25.02.7 · ankitects/anki · GitHub.

I’d be interessted in some troubleshooting. You get this:

It says your computer cannot connect due to invalid certificates used by peer and the issuer is thus unknown.

Could you maybe copy and paste the github link into your web browser and check if the download works this way? If it does not, then there is an issue with your OS configuration.
