Anki Desktop: Feature Request - Built-in Spell Checker

Problem:

Currently, the Anki desktop application lacks a built-in spell checker. This can lead to typos and inconsistencies in flashcards, potentially hindering information retention. Typos can be particularly frustrating when dealing with technical terms, foreign languages, or complex concepts.

Proposed Solution:

Integrate a robust spell checker into the Anki desktop interface that offers the following functionalities:

  • Underline misspelled words in red with a wavy line for easy identification.
  • Suggest corrections from a built-in dictionary or allow for user-defined dictionaries.
  • Support multiple languages to cater to users studying various subjects.
  • Option to ignore specific words that are not technically typos but may not be recognized (e.g., proper names, scientific terms).

Alternative Solutions Considered:

While there are some add-ons available for spell checking, they may not be compatible with all operating systems or Anki versions. Additionally, relying on external add-ons can add complexity to the workflow. A built-in solution would be more user-friendly and universally accessible.

Additional Considerations:

  • The spell checker can be configured to work only on specific fields of a card (e.g., front or back).
  • Users should have the option to disable the spell checker entirely if needed.

By implementing a built-in spell checker, Anki can significantly improve the quality and accuracy of user-created flashcards, ultimately enhancing the overall learning experience.
