Anki desktop app using all app memory on macbook when trying to create custom study

While my Anki desktop app opens fine and usually operates from the start at about 500MB, when I try to create a custom study deck of 200 cards for a specific tag from a deck with over 20,000 unsuspended cards and then press “choose tags”, the app shoots up to >10GB, sometimes >20GB. Then an error pops up telling me to force quit an app because Anki has stopped responding and used up all of my app memory. I’ve gone through all of the troubleshooting steps, changed my driver, tried to update the app, restarted my laptop, re-downloaded the newest version of the app, and held shift down when opening. Any idea as to what might be going on?

  1. Thank you for going through the Troubleshooting checklist. Just to make sure – did you hold down Shift long enough to see the confirmation message that your add-ons were disabled?
  1. I’m not a Mac user, but that sounds like a lot of RAM for Anki to be using as a baseline. Is it still doing that when all of your add-ons are disabled?
  1. Do you have an exceptional number of tags? Have you run a Tools > Check Database lately?

  2. When you respond, please include a paste of what you get from Help > About > Copy debug info.

Thank you for your fast respose!

  1. it runs at about half as it would with the add ons
  2. yes
  3. ive tried this a few times and unfortunately still get the same error

Here is a link to a screen recording of what happens on my laptop

I uploaded it to youtube because it wont let me post large files on here.

Thanks for that additional information. That definitely shouldn’t be happening!

(3) You missed “Do you have an exceptional number of tags?” (my fault for putting multiple questions in one number)

(5) Does this happen with any other decks in your collection?

(6) Does this happen when you manually create a Filtered deck from that deck? Filtered Decks - Anki Manual

  1. The user that created the deck did create a TON of tags and subtags, I just downloaded it from the internet.
  2. I don’t have any other decks in my collection.
  3. I was able to create a filtered deck manually with the cards belonging to the specific subtag that I wanted; I didn’t even experience any lag time.

(3) You might consider checking in with other users (or the deck author) to see if there is something wrong going on with the deck. I’m wondering if there’s something wrong on the templates that is causing a memory leak when Anki looks at all of the cards at once.

(5) … but you do though, because I can see them in your video.

(6) That’s excellent. It still leaves the mystery of whether Custom Study is having this issue for your install of Anki, or for this particular deck. But if you’re happy, stopping there – that’s okay too! :+1:t4:

I can’t seem to reproduce the memory increase on a machine here. Please check the video driver setting in the preferences - do the other two settings exhibit the same behavior, after restarting each time? Does resetting window sizes make any difference?
