I don’t see any error message just the rainbow circle on my mac.
That is a lot of add-ons. Is this still happening when you restart with all of your add-ons disabled? And –

Yes it is
I am clicking on the deck
then custom study
then study by card state or tag
then I have tried each of the options under this choice with 100 cards as the setting
then it just stops responding and bring up the rainbow circle
I have the ankimobile app and have not had the same issues there.
- Does this happen in all decks/note types, or just certain ones?
- Is it crashing when you click “Choose Tags” – or on the “Selective Study” window that comes after that?
- Have you run Check Database?
It happens once I click choose tags. Yes, I just ran check database and restarted anki and the issue still persists.
How many tags do you have?
I did not make the deck, it is a premade deck so I do not know the exact number but there are a lot of tags. I am using the Anking Step Deck.

Are your devices completely in sync now? You could also try running a Check Database on AnkiMobile, and then forcing a one-way sync from there.
I’m having the same exact problem, only with the AnKing Step Deck. Have restarted the app, my computer, deleted and redownloaded the app and have tried it in safe mode. Has there been an identified solution to this?

It still happens when I open in safe mode.
I’ve tried the troubleshooting.
There is not an error message, only a spinning color wheel. When I go to my task manager (activity monitor on Mac) I can see the program is not responding and the memory has jacked up to 40gb or more (sometimes as high as 70-80gb).
It only happens with the AnKing Step Deck and no other deck that I have.

Since it happens with only one deck – and the same deck for both of you – you have to think that the deck might be the problem. Have you talked to the AnKing folks about this?

Run Tools > Empty Cards. Do you have a lot of empty cards? Are they ones you can safely delete? If so, do that.

Do you sync multiple devices? Are your devices completely in sync now? Try running a Check Database on the other device/app, and then forcing a one-way sync from there (upload to AnkiWeb) and receiving it on your computer (download from AnkiWeb).

This happens when you try to start a Custom Study – does it also happen when you create a Filtered deck manually?

Go to your Anki app folder, find
console.batand run that from a Terminal window. That will start Anki and stay open. When the crash happens, is anything output into that window?

It appears they are aware and said it’s not on their end. There is a post that it wont let me link, but it’s the same exact thing on the Ankihub forum. Also relatively recent, unsure if it’s the above poster heeding their advice to come here instead.
- Just tried, no cards to delete.
- I do not. I started trying to download onto my phone a few times, but I aborted it each time since it would take so long due to the sheer size of the AnKing deck.
- I have never tried a filtered deck before, I’ll see how to do that.
- No, I haven’t been able to get it to work at all.
- Will try after the filtered deck option.

- I’ll think about the rest of it – but let’s move fast since you’re under the gun right now! There’s an easy way around this. Go to the Browse window, put together a search for all of the tags you want, copy it, and use it to create a Filtered deck. It’s exactly the same as Custom Study except you can choose whatever you want instead of picking a few items from a menu. Don’t let this stop you!
