Anki Cards Did not Sync across Laptops, Laptop is getting repaired and possibly wiped

Hi, over the past two weeks I’ve been adding cards to my Anki on my main laptop, not closing the application or syncing as I go. I assumed that Anki has automatic backups and hence will sync automatically regardless of whether I close or sync Anki - every time I use my phone/ipad, it always syncs all my cards regardless of whether I close or press sync.

Recently my laptop has been sent away for servicing and I’m on a new laptop - however, when I pressed sync, it only synced to the state of my anki decks 2 weeks ago - I’m missing decks, thousands of cards and all the work I’ve put in over these 2 weeks. Depending on the state of my laptop I’m not sure if they’ve completely wiped it or what - but I was just wondering how to get these cards back as I need them ASAP, and why they haven’t synced as usual - I just assumed they saved, no matter what. I’ve lost so many cards and don’t really know what to do. Is there anything I can do, or should I contact the company tonight, asking them to sync it for me?

Anki does make automatic backups – but those are stored locally on your old laptop, along with the current version of your collection. Anki desktop only syncs to AnkiWeb automatically on open/close.

As long as your old laptop hasn’t been wiped, you should still be able to recover your data. If you can get it, you want the entire contents of your Anki2 data folder – Managing Files - Anki Manual .

It does not. AnkiMobile doesn’t have any automatic syncing. So if you think it’s been doing that, you haven’t been syncing at all.

To stay in sync between devices, you need to sync when you open the app, and when you close/leave the app, on any device, every time.

Unfortunately, we can’t help you recover anything that you never synced to AnkiWeb.
