Anki App - Adding Contents

Hello Everyone! I’m thinking of getting the iPhone version of the ANKI app. Will I be able to add contents using the app ? Or is the app only for reviews of what is added on the web version? Many thanks

AnkiMobile: Works offline + Create and organize cards

AnkiWeb (Web App or PWA): Online only + Only review

With the exception of AnkiMobile (iOS) and Ankidroid (Android), all the others containing Anki in the name is a copycat

Yes, you can add and import notes/cards in AnkiMobile. You’ll be able to sync your collection between your iPhone and desktop Anki.

AnkiWeb (the website) has more limited functionality, but AnkiMobile can do almost everything you can do on desktop Anki.

Hello !
Many thanks !
What can the desktop do that the App can’t ?

Only desktop can use add-ons, don’t recall any other major change

There are very few things, and they are all pretty advanced actions – like managing fields and card types in a note type, exporting individual decks, etc. Not things you do every day, and many users never do them at all.

Hello !
Thank you !
What is add on in anki?

Anki’s capabilities can be extended with add-ons. Add-ons can provide features like extra support for specific languages, extra control over scheduling, and so on.
To browse the list of available add-ons, select ToolsAdd-ons, then click on Get Add-ons. Alternatively, open ankiweb.net/shared/addons in a web browser.

If you have downloaded an add-on that is not working properly, or if you accidentally made a mistake when editing an add-on, you can use the “Delete” option in the menu to remove it.

Add-ons use and modify arbitrary parts of Anki’s codebase, so in some cases, updating Anki can break the compatibility with older add-ons. If one of your add-ons stops working after updating Anki, please consider reporting the issue to the add-on author. If you rely on this add-on, you will need to keep using an older Anki version until the add-on gets an update.

There is a “Contact Author” button on most add-ons pages on AnkiWeb, and many authors include their email address in the add-on, so if you need to get in touch with the author, editing the add-on and looking at the top of the file may help.

To learn how to write your own add-ons, please see the add-on writing guide.

Wow ! This is sooh helpful ! Thank you

Hello !
Thank you for your response. I decided to get the Ankimobile

App on Apple App Store but saw the attached review which states that a deck cannot be created using the ANKI App. The review states that the App is useless. Is this true ??

I don’t have an iOS, but from the AnkiMobile docs

On the bottom of the screen, there are two more buttons. Add/Export allows you to download shared decks, add/create an empty deck, and import/export .apkg files from iTunes. Synchronize synchronizes your cards with the cloud.
Deck List - AnkiMobile Manual

It’s not true. Apparently not everyone “with a Master’s in Computer Science” has the basic common sense to figure out that you might want to click where it says “Add” on the main screen of the app.

Consider another option: that this person who specifically name-checks the copycat app twice in their review is funded by the copycat app.

Thank you all ! I really want to get the App on Apple App Store. I hope that it will work like the laptop app which is free.

  1. I’m studying Maths and can create maths equations etc with the laptop app. Will I be able to write maths equations using the mobile app ?
  2. laptops app allows me to create more than one account - will the mobile app allow this too ? - eg “user 1”, “user 2” ?
  3. laptop app allows me to add images to my creations - will the mobile app allow this too
  4. once I pay for the mobile app, will I be able to use the same app on my other iPhones and iPads - or do I need to buy one for each iPhone and iPad ??

So generally I don’t want to use the mobile app just for reviewing what I’ve already created on ankiweb or the laptop app
Many thanks again

  1. MathJax, yes – MathJax - AnkiMobile Manual . LaTeX, no.
  2. Yes. Preferences - AnkiMobile Manual [However an individual user hardly ever needs multiple profiles – Profiles - Anki Manual – and you can still only sync one profile to an AnkiWeb account.]
  3. Yes. Adding & Editing - AnkiMobile Manual
  4. Most likely – Reinstalling - AnkiMobile Manual – as long as they use the same Apple ID or your IDs are eligible for Family Sharing.
