Anaconda breaks 25.07.3 launcher

I opened anki this morning and got a notification that there was an update available. I downloaded the new version and allowed it to overwrite the old version, but when I try to open anki again, it keeps on giving me this error:

Anki Launcher

I double checked that I downloaded the macOS version of anki, and my macbook is running sequoia 15.5 so I shouldn’t have any problems there. I’ve tried deleting and redownloading anki several times, but get the same error every time. Is there a way for me to still use anki?

  1. You should not need to make a back-up of your data directory, but it is always best to do that. See Managing Files and your Collection.
  2. Download the Anki software again and unzip/expand it into a separate directory.
  3. Follow the instructions in the ReadMe.txt file to install, which may recommend uninstalling first.

If that does not work with the latest version, then try installing the previous version.

Hello,

Edit: I downloaded a previous version 25.02.7 (the installer contains the whole program it seems contrary to the latest one), and it works.
I can leave the original message for information to the developing team or remove it.

Got the laptop yesterday with M4 chip, MacOS Sequoia 15.5
I installed Python 3.13.5 via Anaconda.
Now I got the Anki 25.07-3 installer: the app goes in my Applications folders, however when I open it, a terminal pops up with a warning and an error.

warning**:** Failed to patch the install name of the dynamic library for /Users/xxxxxxx/Library/Application Support/AnkiProgramFiles/python/cpython-3.13.5-macos-aarch64-none/bin/python3.13. This may cause issues when building Python native extensions.

same here.

same problem here as well

If you’re experiencing these issues it would be nice if you could include your system information including macOS version and the exact error logs you’re seeing @unprocione @theotter1 Also the OP here states that they used Anaconda to install Python. Is this really the same for both of you or not?

The problem with Anaconda is tracked here: macOS arm64: Startup fails with SIGKILL due to platform mismatch with Intel Conda · Issue #4216 · ankitects/anki · GitHub

You can work around it with ‘conda deactivate’ before running the launcher from the terminal.

the workaround mentioned by @dae is working for me

The launcher in Release 25.07.4 · ankitects/anki · GitHub should work around this.

Sorry for the delay, I couldn’t reply anymore. This works now. Thanks!!!
[edit]
Unfortunately Migaku add on does not work anymore. I guess I’ll go back to the April version again for now.
