Hello,
I accidentally deleted a deck containing many cards from my AnkiWeb account today.
I only use AnkiWeb through a web browser (Safari on iPhone and browser on PC). I have never used Anki Desktop, AnkiMobile or AnkiDroid, so I don’t have a local collection or local backups.
I have not made any further changes to my AnkiWeb collection after deleting the deck.
Could you please check whether there is a recent server-side backup from before the deletion and, if available, restore it to my AnkiWeb account?
Deleted deck: [PROCESSO PENAL)
Approximate time of deletion: [11:34pm]
Thank you very much for your help.
I’m looking at the AnkiWeb account connected to the email address you used to post here.
Server-side backups are made much less frequently than local backups on a device with one of the apps installed. The most recent server-side backup of your account was made on 25 September, so it will be out of date with any changes or studying you’ve done since then – but restoring it to your account will also overwrite the current collection in your account.
I expect that isn’t quite what you had in mind when you asked for a backup to be restored. It would be in your best interest to preserve your current collection before I do that.
You can download the desktop version of Anki for free – Anki - powerful, intelligent flashcards . Once you have that installed, set up syncing with your AnkiWeb account – Syncing with AnkiWeb - Anki Manual – and download from AnkiWeb.
Once you have your current collection safely off the server, I can talk you through the next steps to get this deck added back to your updated collection.
I have installed Anki Desktop and downloaded my current collection from AnkiWeb. I have also made a backup of my current collection. You can proceed with restoring the September 25 server-side backup. Thank you!
Since you now have your otherwise-current collection on desktop Anki, I suggest this. It’s a lot of steps, but only because I want everything to be clear – so let me know if it’s not.
- Disable automatic sync on Windows –
Tools > Preferences > Syncing.
- Create a fresh (temporary) profile on Windows – Profiles - Anki Manual .
- Confirm that you’ve done the steps above and are ready for me to restore the backup from the 25th to your account.
- Once I’ve restored that, set up syncing in that temp profile and download from AnkiWeb. Now you’ll have your outdated collection from the 25th there.
- Export just the deck you deleted – as APKG, including scheduling information and presets.
- Log out of syncing in this temp profile –
Tools > Preferences > Syncing > Log out.
- Switch back to your main profile (which won’t automatically sync, because you disabled that at #1), and import that APKG you created, including learning progress and presets.
- Sync your main profile with AnkiWeb and upload to AnkiWeb.
- Clean up by going into the Profile Switcher and deleting that temp profile.
- Re-enable automatic sync in your main profile.
I’ve disabled automatic syncing on Windows and created a fresh temporary profile. I’m ready for you to restore the September 25 server-side backup to my account. Thank you!
I’ve restored that to your account. You can proceed with the rest of the steps.
