Would it be bad to upload an ankidroid fork to the play store for free?

Thanks very much for the reply and clarification, and thanks for all the work you do on anki!

I 100% agree with what dae wrote. :+1:

Also, I am delighted to see specialized forks appearing; that’s also what open source is for. In particular, an accessibility-focused fork is long overdue. If relevant, some improvements could even be taken back into AnkiDroid.

If someone is a fan of a particular Anki plugin—let’s say Image Occlusion Enhanced—they should consider creating a fork focused on that feature, given the absence of a good plugin infrastructure on mobile apps and the lower entry barrier thanks to AI development tools.

The naming could be tricky. Something like “XYZ for Anki” might work on Google Play-wise, but of course, dae would have the last word.

In any case, please upload your fork to GitHub. Not only is it a license requirement, but some people might want to help you. :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers!

Was the code ever uploaded? I keep on thinking of it every time I’m using anki lol.

The code is on my GitHub, which is linked on my account description on here. It’s still a fair bit incomplete, but if you need any help getting it going or have any issues, feel free to message me.

hey there, I was able to download it and set it up (i messed around a bit w the file naming to keep both downloaded). Thanks for sharing!

Great!

This popped up in my discord notifications recently and it’s old but I thought I’d reply, for what it’s worth.

As one of the current AnkiDroid developers, I work on AnkiDroid because it is open source - by that I mean everything about the fact it is open source appeals to me. Fork away. Do cool things with the code. Distribute those things. And if they are good things as judged by people liking it + we are not being lame in the main app, we should incorporate them and keep moving forward. It is supposed to be a beautiful thing and I think it only devolves into drama and factions or whatever when people forget about the users. So anyway, first take: I have no issue with a fork-with-changes, I think it’s great.

I do agree that a non-confusing name is useful but I can also feel the pull of some sort of homage to the name so users know what they’re getting and can see the lineage. I thought the suggestions of Anki spelled differently but with similar phonemes was good and something that played with that might work.

@Nicolas_Raoul mentioned an accessibility fork of AnkiDroid and he’s not wrong that AnkiDroid could use some accessibility work. No lie there. But as someone who could quickly get PRs in and releases out I would beg beg beg anyone interested in accessibility improvements in AnkiDroid to try to collaborate with us there. I’d love to make AnkiDroid itself better in that area vs niche clones, at least to the extent possible. And if not possible then again, fork away…

Thanks for the reply! I’ve been finding open source and android development to be so much fun and very educational (I’ve never had the chance to work with other devs until then lol).

Thanks for all the work you do on AnkiDroid, one day I’ll contribute to the app itself once I become more familiar with the view system and such
