Why $33 for UK users and free to Android Users

I think we already have a good explanation for why this is happening in the comments above. But as someone who has tried to develop apps, I’d like to add that Apple’s policies are more restrictive. Publishing an app on the Apple Store requires an annual fee of $99, while Google Play Store only charges a one-time fee of $25. This makes it easier to support and maintain apps on Google Play Store.

I think there is no doubt that AnkiMobile is more polished than AnkiDroid.

AnkiDroid was previously not updated for about 2 years, Ankimobile is updated regularly. E.g. AnkiDroid does not support custom scheduling(so users could not use the first FSRS with the app only).
As johncaiwa complained before, AnkiDroid can have small issues left for about a year, there is no such issue with Ankimobile as far as I know.

Such differences are by whether it is a volunteer or a business.
Volunteers are not paid because they are literally volunteers, so if they develop a lot they run out of resources, so they develop in their spare time and their vacations.
Business apps increase sales by selling, developing more will increase their resources and they can develop full time, so the business developers will always develop faster.

in the Anki ecosystem there is just 3 platforms : ios , Desktop and web , android is not supported yet , but some volunteers cooperate to make an app called Ankidroid that is free of charge and funded by donations

Well, then I don’t think we will ever get the “support”

AnkiDroid is definitely part of the Anki ecosystem.

@sorata @Danika_Dakika, Ankidroid doesn’t guarantee that you will get support actually for the new features. If you well remember, it got two years to update ankidroid from 2.15 to 2.16 because Damien said that he don’t have any goals in the near future to create AnkiMobile for android. The whole app is a single man development endeavor
so basicaly , Ankidroid is not a part of the Anki echosystem

AnkiDroid uses code of Anki for desktop and unlimited AnkiWeb server by official Anki, so I think maybe the official Anki is prioritizing the development of cross platform code or server enhancements rather than supporting AnkiDroid directly. (E.g. Anki’s Svelte future)

I think upstream compatibility is a huge determinant of what AnkiDroid as an organisation does, so I wouldn’t say that.

There was a ton of backend work done at that time which dae also helped with. And there were 4000 lines of code written to migrate people’s collections to a new folder. Surely, such high risk high impact task needs time.

For perspective, dae mentions in Pass/Fail thread that he would like to avoid modifications to review screen before more code is shared among the clients. This is to avoid duplication of work.

Clearly, this forum also has AnkiDroid categories which was first suggested by dae himself. And our docs mention AnkiDroid too.

I mean, if it’s outside the ecosystem than might as well recommend people AnkiApp for Android then.

I totally agree with the price for iOS users and not for Android. I used to be an Android user, but when I saw the price on the Apple Store (R$130 or 33 US dollars), I was a little reluctant to buy it, but I saw that in the browser version the visibility is not as good.

Besides the annual fee, you also have to set money aside to buy the latest Mac whenever your current one does not get updates anymore. It would be a while between purchases of course, maybe even more so with the latest Macs, but it is still a lot of money.
IMO: Tap into Apple ecosystem, be ready to spend more and more money.

Everything from hardware to cables and earbuds are way more expensive for the same quality of Apple vs. Android. I’m sure you are used to that!

For students AnkiMobile is not a bad investment. The average bachelor’s degree holder earns about $1 million more in lifetime wages, Anki is the reliable study app used by 30% to 70% of medical students, that means students can make hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars by studying.

I am sad for the OP who is probably still getting emails from this topic.

Yes, it is quite sad that they are getting emails from replies with no relevance to the original post.

Completely opposite opinion: if Anki was $2,000 USD, I would still buy it. It’s a learning aid. One year of university in the US costs $40,000 USD. One hour of a language tutor costs how much ? no less than $33 depending on where you live.
It’s absolutely ridiculous to be complaining about the price of Anki.

That post of yours was very relevant, not sure why you deleted it.

I don’t think people should be posting threads on public forums unless they are okay with people chiming in with their relevant opinions.

Hmmm I misread that you are the OP and don’t like this kind of discussion, I reread it and I was completely wrong, well this thread has already been solved so I think it’s not a problem.

Language tutors are from 16 EUR an hour, but in my view a tutor fulfills a very different role than Anki in language learning.

A more pertinent comparison is to the Langua AI platform that is getting a lot of attention - 25 EUR/month, but includes interactive conversation, interactive transcripts and flashcards. For language learning that’s a much more effective package than Anki.

And also, not everyone using Anki is a student so comparisons with student fees are irrelevant for those people, although I understand that for medical students it’s a good investment.
