Quick search and highlight

I’ve released a new add-on that highlights your search terms when searching in the browser so you can quickly see where and what was matched within individual notes. It also turns the browser search function into an instant search-as-you-type style of search (like a filter).

I’m currently using https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/225180905, would I be correct in assuming that the main improvement over that one is the search-as-you-type feature?

I did not know that add-on existed! Somehow I missed it when I tried searching for highlighters (lots of results). OOPS. I would not have made this if I knew. I don’t think there are any notable improvements at the moment to warrant switching to mine if Glutanimate’s version works well for you.

At any rate, I don’t think my efforts are wasted. I think my version can provide improvements later on since it gives the developer more control. For example, I can turn the auto-scroll into an on/off toggle which seems to bother some people.

There are pros and cons to each version. Right now my version behaves poorly with HTML content inside the fields (I’ll work on that), but I think the field focus/editing behaviour is better on mine since you see the original content when editing and highlights return when leaving. Which one you prefer will be an individual preference.

I think there is nothing wrong with similar add-ons.
Even if they work the same if the code is different it is a workaround for bugs, there are over 1500 add-ons so it is almost impossible for developers to check them all, the license is open source so anyone is free to copy it, there are already many add-ons with similar functions.

So I think the only problem is to re-upload a well working add-on without editing it and without any reason. Licensing is not a problem but there are etiquette issues and security risks.

Can concur, the auto-scroll really is a pain xD, will give it a try!

I’ve removed the instant-search functionality from the add-on and turned it into its own one over here.

I renamed the existing add-on to better reflect its single purpose now and released version 2 just now.

I found a new (very new!) highlighting technique and we’re lucky to have support for it in the browser engine that ships with the current version of Anki.

I have reworked the add-on to make use of it. It was a little tricky, but I’m very happy with the result. I’ve greatly simplified the internals, and the aforementioned downsides no longer exist, so I can safely say that this add-on is now the better one of the two  .

As a bonus, this release has a toggle option to turn auto-scrolling on/off. It’s a bit ugly but I’m still working on the UI for it.
