Not able to synchronise and save cards because of warning

Hey,

I wanted to look at an old deck and I got the error message “deck not found in limits map”. This happened before I was able to synchronise the decks I previously newly made. Now I’m not able to do anything with the Anki App on my Laptop, because the warning keeps popping up. I want to restart the app on my laptop but I’m scared the newly made cards are going to get lost, because I’m not able to see them on AnkiWeb or AnkiApp on my phone either. Can somebody please help me resolve this issue?

I tried the “check data” on my phone and got the message:

“44 new cards with a position number >= 1,000,000 were found. Please consider changing the position numbers of these cards in the card management system. The date of the last repetition has been made available for direct query for 817 cards. Three missing stacks have been repaired.”

Now I tried synchronising through the AnkiApp on my phone and I get the following warning:

“The decks here and on AnkiWeb are so different that they can’t be merged. Therefore, it’s necessary to overwrite the decks on one side with the decks on the other side.

If you select “Download” now, Anki will download the collection from AnkiWeb, and any changes made on this computer since the last sync will be lost.

If you select “Upload,” Anki will upload your decks to AnkiWeb, and any changes you made on AnkiWeb or your other devices since the last sync will be lost.

Once the decks are synchronized across all devices, future repetitions (of cards) and newly added cards will be automatically merged.”

I haven’t clicked on any of those options.

Neither AnkiWeb or AnkiApp has the new decks I made. Just my Laptop App. And there - as I mentioned - I’m not able to do anything, because of the warning.

I’ll be sooo grateful for any help!! Thank you so much!

It sounds like you already fixed most of the issue by running Check Database.

This part is just advice. Unless you have over 1 million cards, huge position numbers like that are an unnecessary complication in your collection. You can find those cards by searching is:new in the Browse window and sorting by the “Due” column. Select them, use Reposition to move them to more reasonable positions, and then run Check Database again to fix the New-card queue.

This is a normal message, but in your case it’s because something went wrong in your local database that needed to be repaired. If your collection on this device is the most updated and has everything you want and need, then you should choose upload to AnkiWeb. Then sync your other device and choose download from AnkiWeb to receive this repaired version of your collection.

Overall, it sounds like you’re using the right apps, but since you keep using the name of one of the copycat apps, it’s worth being sure – make sure you’re using authentic versions of Anki. The knock-off apps aren’t compatible with our apps. You can access all of the authentic versions through our main site – https://apps.ankiweb.net/ .

Thank you so much for your reply!!

I checked an I am using the right Anki, I mistakenly used the wrong terminology! My Laptop has the Anki desktop version, which I downloaded and I am using right now and am not able to do anything with due to the warning which is not going away and constantly popping up, so I can’t click on anything. Therefore I’m also not able to select “upload to AnkiWeb” as you advised.

What else can I do to safe the cards? Is it safe for me to restart the Anki desktop version without loosing my cards (since they only show up on my desktop application)? Do they save automatically when I completely close the Anki desktop version even if I have a warning popping up?

Thank you!! I really do appreciate it!

What warning are you getting besides that one-way sync warning (“The decks here and on AnkiWeb are so different …”) when you sync?

They are saved automatically, as soon as you create them/edit them. It’s ordinarily completely safe to restart Anki/restart your computer. But for your situation, everything is saved in the database – and it sounds like your database is having issues.

The safest thing you can do is export that new deck – as an APKG, if you need to save review history, otherwise “notes in plain text” will be fine. Then you’ll know you have a safe copy of it, in case your database isn’t going to cooperate, and you need to roll-back to an earlier version.

Going back to the start of the issue –

  • How did you look at the old deck? Was this already in your collection, or did you import something?
  • Did you create the new deck you’re trying to save before that or after that?

The warning on my Laptop (Anki Desktop application) "deck not found in limits map” doesn’t go away and is the only warning I’m still getting. Im not able to press on anything. It’s like Anki is completely blocked. When I try to press okay it just pops back up again immediately and freezes every other possibility for me to do on Anki as why I’m not able to follow the things you said.

And yes, the “old” deck was already in my collection. I created the new deck before that (since after I pressed on the old deck I’m not able to press or do anything). I am not able to do anything Anki related on the desktop version since the warning blocks me from doing anything.

Got it. I had understood you to say in your initial post that you had resolved that error with the Check Database.

Can you still click menu items? Try Check Database again, and Check Media as well.

If that doesn’t get better, then I’d recommend restoring from an automatic backup created after you added the new deck, but before you clicked on this old problematic deck – Restoring an Automatic Backup (Recovering from Data Loss) - Anki FAQs . If you want to look at the timestamps on the files first, you can find them in your profile in the Anki2 data folder – Managing Files - Anki Manual .

Once you have a version restored that looks good – don’t click on that deck again. Run Check Database first, make a fresh backup of your collection, and then you can try

I expressed myself incorrectly, sorry for the confusion! I was not able to press on any menu items since Anki was frozen.
I now just restarted my laptop keeping Anki open. The warning went away and all the cards are there! They’re also synchronised on all my devices now.

Thank you so much for your help and patience! All the best wishes
