I am unable to create a new deck named “Digital Logic” in the Windows app, even though my version is up to date. I also tried creating the deck on AnkiWeb, but it still didn’t work. Eventually, I created a deck named “Digital, Logic,” but I still couldn’t use the name “Digital Logic.”
What is happening for you instead of the deck being created? Are you getting an error? Is it appearing successful, but you can’t find the deck? Is it a top level deck or a subdeck?
My guess is you renamed the default deck to “Digital Logic”, and it gets hidden when it doesn’t have any cards in it. You should be able to locate it in the Browse screen’s sidebar, and rename it back to Default, then create a new deck.
Sorry for the late reply
Nothing is happening when i create the deck. I click the button create deck and nothing happens. I am not able to locate that deck anywhere
Hi, I am not able to locate the default deck in Browse screen sidebar. I am attaching the screenshot of the same below
You can temporarily delete all your decks after exporting them as .apkg
. This exposes the default deck. After you’ve renamed the default deck import back all the deleted decks (with learning progress/scheduling data).
If anything goes wrong, use backups to restore.
There are less extreme ways than “delete all your decks” to force the Default deck to appear. So if you don’t want to try that – this should work:
- Manage Note Types > choose “Basic” > Cards > top “Options” drop-down > Deck Override
- Start typing the name of a deck and a list of existing decks will appear.
- If the theory holds, that list doesn’t include a deck called
Default
, but it does include a deck calledDigital Logic
– select that deck. - Add a note of type “Basic” – that card should be created in the “Digital Logic” deck.
- Rename that deck to
Default
, which should free up the deck name you want – rename “Digital, Logic” toDigital Logic
- Clean-up – turn Deck Override off for the “Basic” note type – delete the note you created (and the Default deck should disappear).
[If that doesn’t work, I have another idea …]
Hi, thanks a lot for the help . It worked, and now I can use the name “Digital Logic”!
Before closing this topic, I just want to ask: what should I be careful of in the future to prevent this from happening again with other deck names?
Now that the Default deck has disappeared again – nothing.
That’s a great question. But it really is just that one deck that has these magical/helpful/confusing properties. Any other deck you create will not vanish, even when empty, so you won’t face the issue again.
- If the Default deck appears again, you’ll know that’s because some cards have ended up in it. You probably want those cards somewhere else, so you can use Change Deck to move them and Default will disappear again.
- If you find yourself in an entirely fresh profile, with only the Default deck available – don’t rename it. Just create another deck for your cards, and Default will disappear.
