Never reviewed unsuspended cards starting with different intervals

Hello everyone, a few of my classmates have mentioned this problem and so im curious if anyone knows the cause.

A friend of mine who has been using the same parameters for a while now (and has previously rescheduled with it) told me she unsuspended some cards yesterday and her interval jumped up from her usual 1-2 days to 7 days. I know she hadnt changed her parameters inbetween that (because she doesnt really know how) and she definitely hadnt rescheduled (also because she doesnt know how). I was curious if anyone knew how to mediate this?

My thought was that because the default parameter set is to “ -is:suspended” that when you reschedule it is only rescheduling your unsuspended cards? But if anyone can explain why FSRS is suddenly changing brand new never reviewed cards to a different interval without having updated any of the parameters, this has now happened a few times and ive also heard other people in my class mention this has come up before too.

Can we see a screenshot of the Card Info for a card that this is happening to – along with the FSRS parameters (as text), and Desired Retention? It’s really hard to tell you what might be happening without that information.

If you just want to kick this back to her to research herself, some other things we might speculate about would be –

  • That card wasn’t really New. Just because a card is suspended doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any review history.
  • She graded that card differently than she thinks she did – or graded the other cards differently than she thinks she did.
  • That card/deck/subdeck isn’t using the same Options preset as other cards.

That part of the default optimization filter is why suspended cards aren’t included in optimizing the parameters.

The reason suspended cards aren’t rescheduled is simpler – they just don’t need to be. But on top of that, if those cards were suspended and New, they would never be rescheduled – they aren’t “scheduled” at all yet.
