My anki on PC was open, but one day I couldn’t go through any of the decks for some reason. I couldn’t add cards or review or anything. I restarted my laptop and the app wouldn’t even open. It didn’t even show up on my task manager. I looked up how to fix the issue. I followed directions and they told me to uninstall and redownload a different version. I did that, and I was able to open the app, but all my decks were gone. The original issue also came back where I couldn’t add or remove cards/decks. I just lost all my cards that I worked on for the last 8 months. What do I do?
Uninstalling Anki wouldn’t touch your collection data – but is it possible you were using a very old version Anki? The default collection location changed, so a fresh install of a new version wouldn’t automatically connect to a collection at the old default location. Have you checked both places – Managing Files - Anki Manual ?
[Whether you can just pick up the old collection and start using it in your new install depends a lot on how old of a version you were using before. But it doesn’t seem like you could be using all that old of a version when you’ve only been using Anki for 8 months.]
The other reasonable possibility is that you’ve simply opened up a brand new Profile instead of the profile you were using with your previous install. Check – File > Switch Profiles – and see what else is listed there.
Even if your collection is somehow missing on your computer, you’ll still have your last synced version on AnkiWeb, and on any other devices you synced with.
