Hey, my AnkiDroid app is asking if I wanna keep my Ankiweb collection or my AnkiDroid collection. But I wanna keep both, because I use Ankiweb in my computer and AnkiDroid in my phone. What should I do??
Don’t use them at the same time. If you’re studying on a computer, close Anki and set it up to sync.
If you’re studying on a smartphone, be sure to set up sync as well. Then you won’t have any problems. Otherwise, I’d suggest always selecting the main web collection. Save periodically on your computer. I don’t think a smartphone is very reliable. You can save from your computer somewhere else, maybe even to another drive.
It’s asking which version of your collection you want to keep. After syncing, you’ll still have your collection and be able to sync it between devices.
Which version you choose to keep now depends on how you got here. For instance –
- If you have good syncing habits – sync when you open, sync when you close, every time – then the only changes are on the device you’re using right now, and you can choose to keep this version you have on AnkiDroid.
- If this the first time you’re syncing this device with your account, and you already have a different collection AnkiDroid than you do on AnkiWeb (and in desktop Anki) – you need to do a few extra steps to preserve your collections so you can merge them after syncing. Syncing with AnkiWeb - Anki Manual
There’s an infinite number of other possibilities, but you know better than anyone what the situation is for you.
Thank you for your tip! So even if I choose to stay with AnkiDroid, for example, my collection in AnkiWeb will still remain (as long as I sync it) ? It wont be deleted at all?
Make copies on your computer.
When asked about synchronization, never rush; always choose AnkiWeb.
That way, there won’t be any problems.
If I had my way, I’d ban regular users from asking questions altogether, just make a copy just in case, and always leave Ankiweb. And if a user checks the box that says I want to manage it myself, then let them solve the problem themselves.
Copies, and I’ll say it again: copies.
Your collection can be deleted if you don’t sync for six months. So, nothing lasts forever. It might be a paid service, anything is possible. In any case, if you have a copy of the deck, you can even transfer it to your phone yourself, bypassing Ankiweb, and continue working.
Thanks again! I will make copies then and have that alert in mind ![]()
