Learning Step and Review Interval Retention (Support thread)

@dae, then add-ons will have to create their own stat windows?

Better that they integrate into the new stats screen. But until we make that easier, the old stats screen will remain.

Contacting you on behalf of the AnKing Team and getting support for the most recent version being 24.06.3

It fails to be viewable in this version which is soon to be the AnKing recommended version.

===Add-ons (inactive)===

(add-on provided name [Add-on folder, installed at, version, is config changed])

I have quickly tested the add-on with Anki 24.06.3 and it seems to work for me.

Are you sure you are not hitting the bug mentioned above? If not, it could very well be a compatibility issue with some of the other add-ons. Could you test if it works without them?

What, exactly, is it that “fails to be viewable”?

Unfortunately it seems that this addon stopped working properly with the newest versions of Anki. At least the Review Retention by maturity now shows unreasonably small values:

I tested the addon with Anki 25.02 and I can’t see any issues. Take that with a grain of salt since I haven’t used Anki for a while and I don’t have a deck with recent reviews to test with.

The numbers on your graph seem somewhat reasonable. Based on a quick eyeballing, there seems to be over 30000 reviews in total. If you know the number should be considerably larger, make sure you have selected a proper scope and period (e.g. “collection” and “deck life”) from the bottom bar.

Also, please note that the number of reviews is indicated by the thin grey bars on the right scale. The colors are not the best but follow what other built-in graphs use.

Thanks for your reply!
The values in that graph are definitely not correct. Even I am not bad enough for a 10% mature retention.
I think there might be new review types in newer Anki versions that possibly mess up the chart. I have seen “manual” and “rescheduled” recently for my cards that probably come from something FSRS does, but I am just guessing that this is the problem.
Anyway, if you are no longer using this addon yourself then it is all good, I will stop using it. I just enjoy having more stats. There is actually a similar chart in the “Search Stats Extended” add-on, but it only produces annual and not monthly graphs.

Now I see what you meant, thank you for the report! Somehow I missed the percentages completely. That should be an easy fix. I’m still keeping this addon updated as long as there are no major breaking changes in Anki. I just have to rely on users to report problems as they appear.

Would you mind sharing your collection with me so I could test the fix with real data?

That’s great news. I can never have enough Anki stats really. I’d share my collection but it looks like I cannot upload the file via this forum so I gotta find a way to share it later.

I have released an update that fixes the bug with manual and rescheduled entires in the review history.

It also includes a workaround for the bug in Anki that makes some of the graphs empty unless a deck is manually selected after starting Anki. The bug has caused enough confusion already. You should still make sure you have selected a deck before opening the stats window or the built-in graphs won’t work properly.

I’m using this add-on (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1949865265) to analyze my learning steps and retention, trying to optimize my Anki workflow. However, right now it only shows stats for the last month or up to 12 months, not for a single day.

This is a big problem because I want to separate today’s learning data from yesterday’s or older reviews. Without daily granularity, I can’t accurately judge if my current learning steps are working or need adjustment based on immediate feedback.

If the add-on had an option to filter and display stats for today only, it would let users like me:

  • Evaluate retention and learning efficiency at the end of each day
  • Adjust learning steps dynamically for the next day based on actual, up-to-date data
  • Avoid mixing old data that can skew the stats and lead to poor decisions

This feature would make the add-on much more useful for anyone who wants to actively tune their learning parameters day-to-day instead of relying on monthly aggregates.

Please consider adding this option. It’s a simple yet powerful addition that would save users from guessing and enable precise, data-driven adjustments.

This add-on works only with the old stats screen, so I’m specifically asking to consider adding this “today only” filter option to that old screen. Without it, I have no practical way to evaluate the quality of my own learning steps on a daily basis.

The only alternative I see is deleting my review history to isolate today’s data, but that probably wreck my FSRS algorithm and mess up everything.

[I moved your request to the support thread for the add-on.]

But is that related to an add-on? Could an add-on show stats for a single day when Anki itself shows stats for the last month and the last 12 months?

Thanks for the suggestion!

I can see the value. While I think one day is probably too short a time span to consider, I agree that one month can be a bit much. After all, you can’t tell how adjustments to the review intervals affect the retention of those cards until the next review. Analyzing a single day’s worth of reviews can make sense if you’re trying to optimize the short (re)learning steps. But even then, you might be chasing a red herring. If you spend too much time on those first learning steps, the issue might be the content of your cards rather than the steps themselves.

There’s no technical reason the add-on couldn’t show stats for any arbitrary time period. The only issue is how to expose that option to the user. I think adding more buttons to the statistics window would make it too confusing. Some users are already puzzled as to why the x-axes of the retention graphs don’t match the chosen period.

One option is to add an option to the add-on config to override the period for this add-on only. It wouldn’t be the most elegant solution, but I don’t have a better idea at the moment. What do you think? Would that fit your use case?

Thank you for your reply!

I would greatly appreciate any workable solution that allows me to see my retention for today only, without having to wait several days or reset my entire collection.

Even a config-based solution would be wonderful if it works.

Could you please help me with this? It’s my biggest source of headache, as I don’t know my actual retention after completing 1,000 reviews today and currently have to wait a month to see it.

Check out the latest version!

If you set the period_override value to 1 it should work the way you want.

Thank you, thank you very much! That option is very important to me.
