Image occlusion randomly bug - empty : please help

Hello,

I am using Anki’s image occlusion feature, the built-in version (I don’t have any add-ons). I am on Mac OS. My version is up to date. But the problem is that when I add an image with multiple occlusions, sometimes it works (example: 8 cards added, great) and sometimes it just adds 1 card with no occlusions, just the image. It’s super frustrating because I’ve tried lots of methods, going slowly, clicking on “cards” before saving to give it time, importing smaller images… but nothing works, it’s super random. I’m attaching an image of what it looks like when it bugs. And I try again 10 times with the same image, and after a while, it works. But I waste so much time! Thank you very much.

Could someone help on this issue ?

I know you said this happens randomly (and I don’t use the native IO, only the IO enhanced from the addon), but maybe you could provide more info for other contributors that do use the build in IO?

E.g.

  1. What are the exact steps that you are doing?
  2. Does it tend to work when you do the steps slowly but tend to fail if you do the steps really fast? I think there was a bug like this in the past.
  3. Does this happen with any image? Or only specific image extensions?
  4. Does this happen only if you Select Image from storage or only when you Paste Image from Clipboard or both?
  5. Please always paste the exact version string, including addons used if any. You can copy them easily via a button, see Troubleshooting - Anki Manual.

It’s difficult or even impossible to help without detailed info, so feel free to be verbose and include all the info you’ve got.

You’re right! Here are the details to support my request:

  • Steps : I take a screenshot of a diagram or image using the Mac screenshot command. Then I click on copy and paste from the clipboard into Anki. I use the built-in image occlusion feature, not an add-on.
  • When I say that the bug occurs randomly, it’s because I tested saving the image in jpeg AND png formats and then importing it into Anki, but that doesn’t solve the problem: sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I also tried playing around with the image size, but that doesn’t change anything: sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I also tried varying the speed at which I performed the steps, i.e., waiting between adding occlusions and clicking Finish, but that didn’t change anything either: sometimes I go slowly and it works, and sometimes I go slowly and it doesn’t work.
  • I am using this version of Anki WITHOUT Add-ons on a Mac Ventura 13.7.8: **Version ⁨25.09.2 (3890e12c)**⁩. Python 3.13.5 Qt 6.9.1 Chromium 122

I’m having the same issue! I also use a Mac, my macOS is Sonoma 14.7 if that matters. Have you found any solution to this? Its been super frustrating having to go in and redo almost every card.

Was this your post – Reddit - The heart of the internet ? (I just want to make sure how many folks are reporting it.)

If this (1) isn’t happening for everyone, and (2) isn’t reproducible, it’s going to be very hard to fix. It might be best to look at what you and @Mathieu have in common in your installs.

  • If you have a case where you’re able to reproduce the issue consistently, we’d definitely like details about that.
  • Please also go to Anki > About – click Copy Debug Info – and paste that entire result here.

The other thing both of you can do is run Anki from Terminal.app with the command:

/Applications/Anki.app/Contents/MacOS/anki

That will keep an open terminal window showing errors. If you see the problem, there might be something written to the terminal output indicating what is happening.
