Sorry to reply to this old thread, but I haven’t seen anyone suggesting icons so I made this rough sketch:
I understand that some countries/languages use the check mark to mean “incorrect”, but they use other symbols which can be used instead.

A check mark with a horizontal line is confusing. Other than that, thats a good idea.
Couldn’t find better unicode characters for again hard.
@dae I am once again asking you to implement colored borders of buttons. Just that. Only colored borders.
Please don’t say “after we migrate to Svelte”. If that was going to happen within the next 12-18 months, sure. But it will happen much later. Until then the least we can do is colored button borders.
No, it’s likely to happen this year. And every feature we add to the old implementation will delay that.
Why not just add a usage tip on the download page if this is such a big issue?
“Hard means difficult and Again means you forgot.”
Coding for this seems like a huge waste of time. People who can’t figure out how to rate their own retention with four measly buttons likely cannot figure out how to effectively use Anki at all. Self-rating is the simplest aspect of the software.
It would be out of place there. An in-app onboarding for first time users would be a great way to solve this, though I think it has been either rejected or noone wanted to work on it.
Possibly. But there’s no way to know for sure. E.g. some people might only struggle with rating their performance, due to psychological factors. It would without doubt make it much easier for those people to use anki, if all they need to do is rate themselves based on a dichotomy.
The good news for users like you and me: Anki doesn’t plan to remove 4-buttons support; which means we can happily continue to use the 4 buttons (or 3 in my case) as we please.
This is already in the manual, but unfortunately nobody reads the manual.
[quote=“sorata, post:19, topic:49092”] think keeping 4 buttons mode for existing users is possible. But if it’s not, see Longtermism - Wikipedia

“future people matter morally just as much as people alive today;”
Wow, what a sort sighted view of the world! This is basically the old “the end justify the means” (hint: this is bad and always leads to bad outcome) but im also morally superior for doing so because i care more about non existing beings than you!
People not born yet has equal rights as people alive. Just wow. And since theres more non born people that alive, their vote should count more too!
This rush to get more done in less time (and to what end?) is going to be the end of us
Anyway, my 2 cents since @dae seems to agree to just use 2 buttons in the future and i think theres value in nuance. It should not be the same if an answer pop out of thin air or if i remembered because i recently saw it referenced. Its using two different parts of the brain
I don’t want to argue about something I mentioned in passing (and something not so related to Anki), but let’s address some things.
Apart from the fact that longtermism isn’t really “end justifying means”, your point is a contradiction. If attempting something leads to a bad thing, then the “end hasn’t justified the means” at all. If it leads to a good thing however, what’s the issue?
You said this, not me. Many utilitarians would also argue the moral worth of a sentient monkey might be higher than some humans.
No, they don’t. You are critiquing a utilitarian philosophy and rights aren’t something we talk a lot about. We are more interested in suffering. Also, some utilitarians would argue we shouldn’t have babies at all and it’s very much compatible with longtermism. Also, it’s not always about getting votes from people in the future.
(BTW, we already do forms of longtermism when we don’t pollute air etc.)
…how exactly did we go from Hard misuse to moral worth of monkeys?
