Etiquette around copying cards from other people's decks... is that stealing?

Hi all,

I’m new to the Anki community and I’m working to build my own Japanese deck. I was wondering what the etiquette is around copying cards from other people’s decks? I’m not trying to claim the work as my own, but I am trying to bring everything I need into a single deck that I can use to learn and grow through.

I was wondering though, whether this is considered stealing/generally bad etiquette in the community.

Is it a non-issue? If it is an issue, is it ok so long as I create a title card giving credit which the user can bury? Is it just a no-go altogether?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Are you planning to republish the deck/share it with others? If not, it’s a non-issue. Everything that is shared on AnkiWeb is shared freely for you to use for your own learning.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t yet know if I would share my collection, but I guess if there’s even a chance that I will then it’s best I plan ahead and make every card myself.

I spent last night building a deck of Hiragana cards myself, and ironically it taught me more Kana than I thought I could learn in a single night. I think that helped make the decision for me

The easiest way is to just add a tag to every card in the public decks you import. That way if you move the cards to your own deck, you will know which ones were from the public deck and which ones you made yourself. In the future, if decide to publish your deck, you can go back later and remake those cards.
