I have downloaded an anki deck from the Internet onto my MacBook, which has a lot of tags in it. When I try to search for the tags and learn them, the search column remains completely empty. I have already deleted and re-downloaded anki once and asked chatgpt, that didn’t help either. What can I do?
Are you clicking on the tags from the right panel in browse screen? Or you’re trying to build a filtered deck from custom study?
Deleting, redownloading, and ChatGPT are all unlikely to be helpful with what you’re trying to do.
Start with these:
- Sidebar search tool: Browsing - Anki Manual
- How to write searches: Searching - Anki Manual
If that doesn’t clear things up –
I’m not sure what “search column” means to you – perhaps a screenshot will help.
If you need help writing your search in the correct syntax, please post that search text as well.
You mention an “error” – are you getting an actual error message? If so, please post a screenshot or the exact text of that too.

Try the following steps.
- Click on Browse from the top menu in the main Anki window (on your computer).
- Select the deck that you wish to search in the left pane of the Browse window.
- In the Seach text box at the top of the window, add a space after the deck name, then “tag:” and then the tag, by which you wish to filter. This will give you a filtered list of cards from your chosen deck that have that particular tag.
But as @sorata asked, are you trying to create a filtered deck, or are you just trying to see what cards hold a particular tag?
