I’ve always found emojis fascinating as a medium of communication. As I was learning a language, I wondered if I could use them to learn concepts directly, without going through my native language. I looked for Shared Decks that used emojis as a card front, found a few, but not in the language I was interested in; often they were incomplete as well since there are quite a lot of emojis now.
So I built Emoji Anki, an AI-free, web-based, client-side only (the website is static) Anki deck generator with Emojis, with 110 languages across 8 emoji categories.
Emoji Anki can also be used to learn emojis, or flags. I just finished learning all country flags in the emoji set, it was fun. I also went through ~300 emojis, learning about 85% new words.
You might be wondering which word is used to describe emojis in the card back: I picked the simplest approach, what the Unicode CLDR data says should be used for TTS purpose. Yes, there might be ambiguity for some emojis, but the goal is to learn new words in a fun way, and vocabulary refinement can come later, as part of other learning mediums.
