Can't record audio on flashcards, says I need to install 'lame'

I’m trying to record audio on my flashcards from the Desktop app. I’m on Windows 11 and have the latest version of Anki downloaded. I have granted it permission to my microphone and have no issue recording audio on other apps (e.g. Audible). When I try to record audio I get an error reading “Couldn’t record audio. Have you installed ‘lame’?”

Things I’ve tried that didn’t work:

  • Using a different mic
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling Anki
  • Restarting my computer
  • Downloading lame directly (not sure if I downloaded the wrong version or have it in the wrong place?)

Usually lame comes with Anki now, I believe. Have a look at this thread here. Perhaps a reinstall of Anki will fix the problem?

The error message can be misleading. If you run Anki from anki-console.bat (Under C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Programs\Anki by default), you should see a more informative error printed.
