Audio cut off on Mac app

Hi there,

I just downloaded Anki a few days ago, so it’s the latest version, no extra add-ons, etc. I downloaded a deck of Spanish Pronunciation from Fluent Forever. Each word has an audio file to go with it, and I notice that a lot of them have the very end of the sound cut off. When I go to the browser version or AnkiDroid, I do not have that problem. Some words seem okay, but it’s hard to tell since they’re all just single word files, and it could just be margin of error whether the cutoff is noticeable or not.

I found a similar post here on the forum, but it’s from five years ago and references a debug console that I don’t seem to be able to get at.

So… any other tips?

Thanks,

Tandava

If you already found a post that potentially solves your issue (i also found mutliple, but no idea which one you found) then I suggest you try them first. The docs explain how to open the debug console: Miscellaneous - Anki Manual.

The shortcut keys are unfortunately dependend on the location of the US layout keys; meaning e.g. I (on a german layout) have to press Ctrl+Shift+..

The post I found is called “Anki on Mac sound stops working” from January 2020. (I can’t link to it for some reason—even though the post editor lets me insert links, they’re rejected when I try to submit the post.)

If there are better options, please share.

I did manage to get the debug console opened, and pasted in what it said, and got “None.” So it’s not clear what to do next. Since that post is 5+ years old, I don’t know that the comments about Beta versions are necessarily relevant, and it’s not clear whether the OP ever got his problem fixed anyway.

So again, if there are any other, more up-to-date options, I’d appreciate it!

Thanks,

Tandava

Are you seeing this issue with Bluetooth speakers/headphones?
If so, you might want to check whether the problem occurs when using non-Bluetooth speakers/headphones.

I tried a few different devices and it seems to be inconsistent. It’s not happening on every sound file, but I isolated three that definitely had the problem. Here’s what I found:

  • Mac internal speakers - okay. (I thought they had the problem a few days ago, but perhaps I’m remembering wrong.)
  • First set of bluetooth headphones - audio consistently cut off at end on all three files.
  • Second set of bluetooth headphones - okay, though I’ve only tried once so far.
  • Bluetooth speakers - mostly okay, but strangely, one of the three files was repeatedly cut off at the beginning rather than the end.

Is there anything we can do to make bluetooth more reliable? I don’t have wired headphones. And the second pair of bluetooth ones I tried are not mine.

If it’s bluetooth only, then maybe try an addon like this one: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1972606896.

Apparently it’s related to the sleep mode of bluetooth devices.

If the add-on doesn’t work for you, another workaround might be to have some very-low-volume audio constantly playing in the background, so the bluetooth devices don’t sleep.

For example, using the Music app you could play music or white noise or brown noise or one of those “10 minutes of silence” tracks, on a loop and at a very, very low (but not completely muted) volume. Or, a web browser tab in the background playing a YouTube video with similar audio.

Hmm, the add-on sounds great, but it didn’t work for me. I did restart Anki and confirmed that the add-on is still listed in the add-ons section, but the same thing happens.

The other option works, so I guess for now I’ll just find a good silence track to use, though it’s a bit more of a hassle.
