Assessing retention with new study method

Hi All,

I have been using Anki to study French for 3 ish years. I recently decided to hand write the cards / words I miss each day. I saved my stats to see if my new study method is helping. I am using FSRS. My question is two-fold:

  • How long should I wait to see if the extra study is helping.
  • If my new study method is helpful, what should I expect to see in either the regular or the extended stats screen.

Thanks,
Paula

It seems like that will depend on how long it takes for those cards to come back again for Review, and probably come back a few times. What you’re looking for is “fewer lapses” on individual cards, but that won’t show up right away, even for those individual cards.

I think overall retention is your best bet. For an experiment like this, check the True Retention table at the bottom of Stats. Make a note of the “Total” retention for “Last week” and “Last month.” Then you can check that 2 weeks later, and 2 weeks after that, to see if things are shifting. 2 weeks is somewhat arbitrary, but I am considering that it’s long enough to empty out the “Last week” results, and half-empty the “Last month” results.

Update: I came to the conclusion that the statistics were not going help in evaluating my learning experiment… That it was going to take too long to see (or not see) results and that too many other things might change in the meantime.

I ended up looking at the database to get a more detailed view. What I really wanted to know was: Is writing down missed or hard cards reducing the number of times that I miss them in the future. IOW, if my again date was in my experimental window, was my learning improved?

I saw some improvment in my expirmental window. I suspect that at least part, if not all, of this improvement is the fact that I am being more vigilant about fixing problems. (Writing the missed card out puts the problem more in my face.)

I’m going to look again at the database at the end of next month. Hopefully the improvement will persist.
