AnkiMobile: Local videos stop working after first review (offline mode broken)

Hi there,

I’m using AnkiMobile on iPhone and facing a serious issue with local video playback in flashcards.

I manually transfer .mp4 files (H.264 + AAC) via iTunes File Sharing to the Anki app folder. I also import an .apkg deck that references those videos using both

Everything is supposed to work offline, and it actually does — but only once.

After the first time a card is shown, any repeated viewing (even a second later) causes the video to stop working and show endless loading. It happens both with and without internet, and also after a full AnkiWeb sync.

All files are correctly formatted, properly named, and tested on Windows and Android — where everything works perfectly. Only AnkiMobile on iOS fails to keep video playback working.

Sometimes I even get the message: “The current card is missing”, even though the file and the card were just working a moment earlier.

I’ve tried:

  • Full reinstall of AnkiMobile
  • Re-importing decks
  • Offline mode with no AnkiWeb sync
  • Using both video and sound tag formats

Nothing helps. The problem is repeatable, affects most cards, and breaks offline usability.

Would appreciate any help or advice!

Thanks in advance.

Does restarting your device make any difference? I’ve seen iOS bugs in the past that resulted in videos refusing to play, and a reboot fixed the issue.

If problems persist, it would be helpful if you could move one card to a new deck, export it, and share a link to it for me (private message here or post on anki.tenderapp.com is fine).
