Terrible text input lag

I am getting multi-seconds input lag delay when editing the “back” of cards. I am talking 3-5 seconds on average. It is getting to the point where Anki has become almost unusable. The lag has a very specific characteristic too. When I add characters to the end of any line in the text box, there is not much lag.
