Advice on hierarchical tags

I’ve started using hierarchical tags and am wondering if I’m using them in the intended way. At first I was adding them as Topic, Topic::Subtopic, and so on. But then I realized that simply adding Topic::Subtopic seemed sufficient, as the note was classified as both Topic and Subtopic, so there was no reason for me to define it as Topic in addition to Topic::Subtopic. Should I just be adding the most detailed chain of the hierarchy (Topic::Subtopic)? Is there an advantage to adding all the “parent” parts of the hierarchy?

I just add “Topic::Subtopic”. Adding subtags is already a hassle, and I don’t want to spend more time adding more tags. I don’t see any advantage to explicitly adding all the parents.
