Have the concepts of the "Again", "Hard", "Good", and "Easy" buttons changed?

Hi everyone!

As far as I know, in Anki, the only button that counts as a “mistake” is Again, while the others (Hard, Good, and Easy) are considered as “correct”, but with varying levels of difficulty. However, I’ve seen a group of people claiming that the Hard button also counts as a different kind of mistake. Is this true?

Have there been any changes recently regarding how these buttons work? Does anyone know if this is documented anywhere officially?

No this is not true. There recently have been some talk going around about misuse of Hard button (with u/ClarityInMadness leading) but other than that nothing I’m aware of. You probably misunderstood what they were saying?

No.

It’s not documented anywhere but we’re trying to except that not all of us agree on the specifics of how the buttons are to be used (for example, what do you click with a very minor mistake?). Well, there is some information here: Studying - Anki Manual.

Just hide the labels altogether. They can be confusing and take up vertical space.

I’m not sure what add-on offers that functionality, but it is ordinarily not recommended that learners grade their answers based solely on how long they “think” they can remember the card. Human beings are actually pretty terrible at guessing that for themselves.

It’s much better to understand the criteria for grading and ignore the intervals.

  • incorrect = Again
  • correct = Hard, Good, or Easy – depending on how hard it was to answer the question. But most of the time, it should be Good.

2 buttons mode. Easy+Hard is confusing.

Yes, generally it’s better to disable “hard” and “easy” as well. So, you use only two buttons. Usually, “h” for “again” and “k” for “good”. And you don’t need to think about the intervals when you review. I use this addon, it comes with the recommended settings enabled out of the box.

It’s a mistake to use Hard when you forgot the card. According to my survey on r/Anki, about 10% misuse Hard.

Btw, recently the manual has been updated and now it has official guidelines on choosing the answer button: Studying - Anki Manual
