Feature Request: High-Quality/Neural TTS support for Language Teachers and Learners

Hi Anki Team,

I am a teacher for non-Arabic speakers, and I have been using Anki for a long time to build a database of over 1,000 sentences to help my students learn the Quran and Tajweed rules in English.

Anki is a great tool for memory, but I am facing a major struggle with the Text-to-Speech (TTS) quality on Android. Even after extensive attempts to customize the card templates and codes to force high-quality voices, the output remains robotic and metallic. This is a significant issue because, in my field, the precision of sound and clarity of pronunciation are essential.

Since I don’t have access to a PC to use the “AwesomeTTS” add-on, I am limited to the basic engines on my phone, which are not sufficient for professional teaching.

My Request:

Is there a plan to integrate Cloud-based or Neural TTS engines (like Google Cloud or Azure) directly into the AnkiDroid app? This would be a life-changer for teachers and students who rely on natural-sounding audio but work primarily from mobile devices.

I have put so much effort into my 1,000 cards, and I really don’t want to leave Anki for other apps (like Quizlet) just to get better audio quality.

Thank you for your hard work on this amazing app.

Best regards,

Amr

I hope you are not using TTS for reading Al Quran!!!

There are many Al Quran decks at https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks?search=quran. Some might have audio.

Alternatively, you can download high quality audio from many reciters from https://quran.ksu.edu.sa/ayat/?pg=patches&l=ar. You can then make a deck the way you want.
