Anytime you change FSRS settings and you want it to have an immediate effect. And (apparently) periodically to rebalance your workload.
You can change the “last 7 days” to another time-period in Tools > Add-ons > Config (for the Helper add-on).

Load balance works on the global collection level. So you need to check the curve of the total collection.
That explains why my Future Due kept getting bumpier. Thanks for the clarification! I’ll give balancing a poke every once in a while to keep it fresh.

I thought this too which is why I never rescheduled really! It makes sense now and the work load has definitely gone done now that I’ve rescheduled them.
Quick addition to this. In FSRS it seems that cards which I have just pressed good to the day before (aka only pressed good once) are computed in the retention rate which may be why it is so low? I thought retention rate was only computed using mature cards or am I mistaken.
If you’re looking at the True Retention stats [Shift + Stats] – it’s got separate and combined stats for young and mature. All graded cards that are not in the learning/re-learning steps should be included.
If you’re looking somewhere else – where are you looking?
Ohhh, I see, so what does the FSRS retention rate algorithm go by? the total monthly retention rate?
Also do you think it would be more ideal to reschedule cards everyday before or after reviews?
FSRS is using your desired retention to set your next interval on each review. The full answer is mathmathmathmath, so I won’t try to make it sound simple!
Your True Retention stats are the overall outcome of that process – what you actually did – not what FSRS predicted.
No, definitely don’t reschedule every day. See above – Best review setting for a deck - #21 by Danika_Dakika .
You can do it every day, but I don’t find that it wanders very much. Once your reviews are balanced, they won’t stay perfectly in balance going forward, but as each jumps to a new due date, they won’t immediately lose all of their dispersion.
Comparing my Future Due right now (I assume I rescheduled-rebalanced 4d ago when we were talking about it in this thread) –

to what it looks like after a reschedule-7-days.

It’s nothing to write home about!
I see thanks!
Is there a way to kinda find the best retention rate for myself? Do you know what SM-2 retention rate is for a rough idea? I feel like its around the 85% mark to be honest but I don’t know how to look at my previous stats for SM-2 and 90% feels like way more workload than I used to do so have lowered the retention rates.
I wonder if setting a retention rate of around m average true retention rate for this month would be the most ideal
This is still the best place to look for your retention under the SM-2 algorithm.
For moderately difficult material, the average user should find they remember approximately 90% of mature cards that come up for review. You can find out your own performance by opening the graphs/statistics for a deck and looking at the Answer Buttons graph - mature retention is the correct% on the right side of the graph. If you haven’t been studying long, you may not have any mature cards yet. As performance with new cards and younger cards can vary considerably, it’s a good idea to wait until you have a reasonable amount of mature reviews before you start drawing conclusions about your retention rate.
[This does not mean you necessarily need to enter anything in the “SM-2 retention” field in the FSRS Options. Reasons to use that field will be rare. Deck Options - Anki Manual ]
So I checked and found that my previous retention rate was around 80%, which got me through the first year without any issues (in fact got top 10%). Does that mean I should put my current FSRS retention rate at 80% to help with the workload? Or is 80% too low? Currently set to 85%
Anything below 85% is going to improve your workload. Then reschedule, and if you don’t like the look of it, Undo so you can try something else.
