Add a setting to modfiy the text of the Answer keys labels

Again, Hard, Good, Easy.
They are great labels. Though they may not be for everyone.

In “Preferences > Review > Answer keys” tab, the ability to modify the labels would be greatly appreciated.

I liked your idea, but then I thought about it a bit more and now I don’t like it.

It doesn’t un-confuse the confused users, it’s only useful to users who already know what buttons do. If someone doesn’t realize that “Again = fail, the rest is pass”, it won’t help them.

This is an issue that cannot reasonably be solved with just changing the labels indeed.

They are different issues though, being able to change the labels can only help, many of the users are used to the default ones anyway, it will only be a plus for the new users and raise a “oh cool didn’t know we could do that” to other users.

Maybe the ability to change the outline color is a fix, default colors being red for “Again” and green for the others, as you already suggested .

Why and to what would you want to change the text? I don’t see why it could be useful, as the buttons are already describing what they do.

Do you have something specific in mind that would be improved by such a setting? Maybe it could be discussed to change the default text (though a lot of suggestions had been rejected in the past regarding this).

Personally I’d just think: “You can do that? But why?”

And it might also add maintaince burden for the anki team and contributors.

That’s exactly the problem here. They do for you. I’m currently going through the headache of remembering the new labels so that I don’t confuse the fsrs algorithm.

rename Again to Fail
rename Hard to Again
rename Good to Pass
Easy is fine

That helps me a lot answering correctly. Maybe it just confuses you though, and that’s fine too.

Great then! It will not change your experience… no downsides… no?

If they maintain multi language support it’s indeed annoying. In this case I would suggest keeping the default translations, and if they are modified, to not bother translating… after all they were set by the user, no translation is needed.

That would be inaccurate. Hard does not show the card again and thus shouldn’t be named like that.

The downside is more code and maintainance burden. Additionally, having lots of settings that most people wouldn’t use causes cognitive load – we already have a big problem with users thinking anki is hard, even though it’s actually fairly simple.

For me as a (power) user though, I couldn’t really care less about this setting existing.

Why do you have to remember them? They are in order from left to right, where again means you failed the card (partially or completely) and the other buttons mean you passed. The more to the right you go, the better you remembered the card.

Maybe you’re having difficulty because you’re missing important info? Studying - Anki Manual explains the answer buttons, which might help you.

Aside from that – I don’t think adding an option to change the text is sensible. If the answer buttons really are that unclear (and you really aren’t alone with this), then there needs to be better labels or some sort of short in-app instructions on first launch. In other words: treat the cause, not the symptoms.

I feel like explaining will only bring more confusion, right or wrong is not the question, it’s how one feels when reading those labels and how one pictures them to help him answer accordingly.

That’s because I read that page that I thought of renaming the labels, they seemed obvious to me.

I cannot agree more. I’ll leave that topic as that, seeing that it’s getting nowhere and that I feel alone in this lol.

From a customisation perspective, not a horrible idea. But customisations should be left for addons IMO.

Indeed, that’s exactly what came out of this discussion.
