When trying to import a file, all of my downloads are greyed out

I just downloaded Anki and I’m trying to import my first file. I click on import file and get taken to my finder screen where I can choose from desktop, downloads, iCloud, etc. It doesn’t matter which I click on, every icon is grey and it won’t let me click it.

This sounds like something your file-system is doing, but it’s hard to know what to suggest without more specifics.

  • After installing Anki, did you restart your computer?
  • Have you tried other ways to trigger the import – like, double-clicking (from outside of Anki) the APKG, or drag-dropping it into the main Decks screen of Anki?
  • What OS are you using? What version of Anki did you install?

I did restart my computer. I tried to drag it into the main Decks screen and it said “unsupported file”. It’s a powerpoint. I’m using Tahoe 26.3.1 and I just downloaded Anki from the App Store today, so I would assume that means the latest version? Or is that not right?

Anki is not able to import PowerPoint files. From the Anki documentation:

Anki can import text files, packaged Anki decks created by the export feature, Mnemosyne 2.0 .db files, and SuperMemo .xml files.

Please see the documentation for more details about what types of text files can be imported.

In addition to what BenJamesBen said –

If you got it from the App Store, you’ve probably got AnkiMobile – the (paid) iOS version of the app – which is more limited than the full desktop version. If you’re on macOS, it will be a lot easier to learn about Anki using the full app – Anki - powerful, intelligent flashcards .
