> Since I create flashcards in Marginote and import them into Anki, sometimes when reviewing in Anki I come across handwritten notes that need to be edited. However, I can’t edit Marginote’s handwritten notes directly in Anki—I have to edit them in Marginote and then re-import them into Anki, which effectively creates a new flashcard with similar content. I’d like to replace the old flashcard—which has review progress and similar content—with the new one, so that the new flashcard inherits the review progress from the old one. Is this possible?

There is no easy way to do that – but it also shouldn’t be necessary.

Is that because the note [using that term [as Anki does](https://docs.ankiweb.net/getting-started.html#notes--fields)] only consists of an image/screenshot of the material from the other app? If so, you should be able to update your existing note with a new image instead of importing that image to create a separate note.

The reason Anki is creating a separate note is that it can’t recognize that this is an update to an existing note. On import, Anki makes that connection based on [the note type and the first field](https://docs.ankiweb.net/manual/importing/text-files#duplicates-and-updating). So another way to do this would be to have a unique first field that doesn’t change, like a title for the note. So even if the image changes, the existing note will be recognized and updated on re-import.

If you’re using some functionality in that other app (or an add-on) for this current workflow, you may need to talk to that developer about how they creates the file that you’re importing into Anki. They should be able to make the note match so it is updatable when re-imported.
