You are speaking of **interference** and it is a real thing. I have had this on my mind for quite a while now.

For the past week, I have been successful in fully clearing any reviews of that deck, and I have consistently clocked true retention rates lower than 95% (my desired retention). Since I have no backlog (which I suspected earlier to be the main reason) and this deck is in co…

In my medical cards collection of 67,951 cards, which have not all been made at the same time but through a continuous and painful process, 9743 cards have failed. This translates into a true retention of 85.6%. My desired retention is set at 95%. This process has taken place at an average of 3000 cards per day so I don’t know if this…

New cards interfere with retention of older cards → Retroactive Inhibition [Retroactive inhibition | psychology | Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/science/retroactive-inhibition)[Learning theory - Stages, Acquisition, Retention | Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/science/learning-theory/Stages-of-learning#ref586992) This also applies in the opposite direction. I suppose it is very difficult to model. I am not sure how one could model the influence of a collection’s size AND its Rate of Growth on the Retention of learned cards (aka Interference).
