New study screen [Official thread]

If you use the double tap and the Double tap time interval is set to around 1500ms, that’s expected, as the only way to confirm that you wanted to do a double tap or not is by waiting the interval.

Swipe and multi finger gestures always work immediately. If you don’t use double tap, single taps are immediate as well.

i noticed “type in answer” cards in the new screen trigger the keyboard auto-correct while the old screen they didn’t.

screenshots

for me this is an issue, as i use type-in cards specifically for spelling exercises, and i assume so do many others.
ideally this should be a toggle, and i’d argue it should be off (i.e. without auto-correct) by default, though opinions may vary.

i very much agree with that. in fact i didn’t even notice the new feedback icons until now, since my right thumb at least partially covers them >90% of the time.

one final thing, while the new screen is definitely faster once the cards have loaded, the initial deck load seems to be 1-2 second slower than the old screen. is this expected? a bug?

Did you notice my remark:

‘The old study screen reacts immediately.’ ?

I never ever had an issue with gestures on my 8’’ tablets before. And I swipe normally instead of double tapping.

I know that this tablet does not have a very fast CPU but until now I had no issues with AnkiDroid gestures (since about 2015). Obviously there exists a difference between the two implementation of the study screen in respect to their ability to notice gesture events which is only visible if you have a slower hardware. (My smartphone Pixel 4a reacts as fast as expected.)

Anyway, it’s very annoying to wait always 1,5 s before something happens if using a gesture. Just tried it… (And normally I learn on my tablet.)

Hi all, thanks for all your work on the new study screen. It looks great. I am, however, challenged by the width of the buttons at the bottom of the screen. The biggest problem is that they don’t accommodate larger fonts well. Having a 4-letter word wrap is distracting. On my tablet the font only works when it is at the middle size or smaller. The second challenge is that the button is only as large as my finger, which is an accident waiting to happen.

There is lots of real estate and yet the buttons are crammed in the middle. Please don’t make basic functions in the UI less usable for low vision people to accommodate additional functionality.

Could you share your debug info? (Settings > About > Copy debug info). Or just which device you are using

Here you go.

You can also add whiteboard to the toolbar in the new screen. It’s in the settings: New Study Screen > Toolbar actions

I would like to have an option to dock the whiteboard toolbar to the top, not overlaying the card content.

Would docking it to the left/right cover card content for you? Those are the currently available options via the ellipsis button in the whiteboard toolbar.

I would love it, if the oled dark mode stayed sort of like the old one, where almost the entire screen is black.

Old one with a nice oled dark mode:

New one with very much gray borders:

I can only add the toggle whiteboard button to the toolbar, not the clear whiteboard button

I’ve also noticed that regardless of where I set the toolbar position, on tablets or when my foldable phone is in tablet mode (unfolded), it will always place the toolbar at the bottom.

You can see when I fold my phone (bottom 2 screenshots), it is at the top, since I set the position to top in settings.

Immediately when I unfold, it teleports to the bottom. This is true on regular tablets too.

Hello,
I have been using AnkiDroid for about two years, and it has been a huge help for my studies. Thank you very much for all the hard work you put into this project.

I would like to share some feedback regarding the new Study Screen introduced in the recent update, specifically about the Whiteboard feature.

I have noticed a few usability inconveniences:

  1. Unlike before, the Whiteboard has to be manually enabled every time, which feels inconvenient during repeated study sessions.

  2. The Whiteboard toolbar is always visible and cannot be hidden, which can be distracting and obstruct the study view.

  3. It is not possible to use the eraser function via the side button of a tablet stylus, which reduces efficiency when writing.

Thank you again for your continued efforts and dedication to AnkiDroid.

For the last version of AnkiDroid, I feel the dots of Answer Feedback was subtle and elegant.

The new shows of study screen is fading little bit fast than I could notice it, sometimes is possible to miss.

Maybe AnkiDroid could simply make it longer or add a option for it. Thanks for this marvelous service .

Some feedback for the new screen:

  • The answer feedback icons should be placed higher on the screen. The current position just above the answer buttons is hardly noticeable and is nowhere near the main contents of the card. Generally my eyes are going to be hanging around the top of the card especially after selecting an answer and start the next card. That’s the general area the feedback icon should be. IMO, placing it just above the card and centered horizontally would be perfect (in between card counts and menu buttons).
  • The answer feedback icons disappear way too quickly. They should persist longer and/or be configurable.
  • Double tap time interval setting to prevent double taps seems like it does not work.
  • I’m seeing different behavior with some JS I added to a card. I have a link element with an onclick attribute that calls some function, however clicking on that link (on the card’s back) brings me to the front of the card. I found that adding `return false` at the end of the onclick prevents that behavior.
  • I would like to be able to add toolbar action buttons above the answer buttons. Putting the toolbar at the bottom gets close, but I find the toolbar at the bottom is rather strange particularly being below the answer buttons. The answer buttons are the primary actions and should always be at the bottom. Any secondary actions make sense being placed on top of that. Additionally, I don’t really want most of the toolbar at the bottom anyway. I’m really just trying to get better access to a few buttons like undo, replay audio, etc.

Overall, I like the direction this new review page is going and plan to continue using it over the old one!

Hi,

Thanks for your work on ankidroid. I use it daily and really can’t overstate how glad I am that it exists.

I have tried out the new study screen and have some feedback on ways that the visuals and layout would work better for me.

For the second and third issue (colors and contrast) I think a connecting thread is that the changes seem better optimized for the Night theme being set to “Dark” instead of “Black”. Those issues are mostly alleviated if I change the setting from black → dark.

Vertical/Horizontal Spacing of the answer buttons.

Issue:

The total vertical space devoted to the answer tray seems the same as before, but the buttons take up a smaller percentage of that. This makes it more difficult to aim your tap while still paying attention to the card content which tends to be much higher up the screen.

I took screenshots and tried to align them on my laptop to show what i mean:

Possible Solution: Increase the vertical scale of the buttons so that they are larger as before. POssibly also horizontally as well to be more space filling.

Answer Button Text - ease of reading

Issue:
The new answer buttons unquestionably look nicer. But I find them more difficult to look at quickly and read the text of than the old buttons. I think this is some combination of a lower alpha for the font, tighter spacing of the letters and less contrast with their background.
Here is a picture of the buttons:

Possible Solution

Less alpha on the answer button text, or some other tweaking of the font. Or maybe a different colored outline for the letters, with teh letters the same color as their background but less alpha. i.e. solid green for the good text.

Background Colors

I ankidroid set to follow the system theme, and have the night mode set as black (opposed to dark) which I prefer especially for when doing reviews in the late evening.

Issue

Since switching I have found the small brighter border around the card to be very distracting. (I think this is partially just change aversion, but also partially real).

It really doesn’t come through when I screenshot so I took a photo of it. With a fairly bright phone screen it looks like this with pretty harsh contrast:

Potential Solution:

A third styling option where the background color is uniform (as black ideally), or possibly one where the card it self is lighter than the rest of the background. Or even just making the new lighter background slightly darker could a long way

Good night (here at least). First of all, thanks for the hard work and continuous developement of this amazing app.

About the new screen, I like the overall idea and the change to having most stuff on the easily accesible bottom instead of top. However, I don’t agree with having all in one line, with the essential for every card show answer and again to hard buttons that one has to press for every card shared by non-interactables like the card numbers or only sometimes used like the undo buttons, much less them being in the more ergonomic places. I could easily reach with either thumb any of the 4 options, in this version I can’t.

A full width show answer button is far better, especially on larger devices.

In short, what used to be a quick tap on my tablet anywhere in the bottom is now an annoyance. The same with the 4 schedule buttons, they all being crammed in the center is more awkward than the old, bigger ones. I believe that the answer button/schedule buttons should be in a similar position as before, and a second line with the options/card numbers/etc. below it.

Thanks.

Edit: Tried on phone and it doesn’t have these issues. I do have toolbar on bottom on the tablet the pics show, but it doesn’t wrap. Bug, maybe?

Sadly not, there the bar also covers content of the card. Therefore, a docked mode, preferably at the top or bottom would be really helpful.

Hi Ap0, same here I also use it all the time. Also I am missing the feature of scrolling with two fingers while using whiteboard mode.

Feedback on gestures in the new screen

In the old one, I had configured ‘show answer’ to have the gesture ‘touch bottom’. This enables me to swipe left, right, any direction, or tap bottom to reveal the back of the card. This might have been a bug (my expectation originally was that specifically tapping the bottom of the screen would be necessary), but it was very useful.

The reason it was useful is that, I have ‘answer again’ as ‘swipe right’ and ‘answer good’ as ‘swipe left’. So I was able to use the same gesture twice to reveal back-of-card and also select again/good, which felt smooth. ‘swipe right, swipe right’, or ‘swipe left, swipe left’.

Could a way to achieve the same functionality be added to the new screen?

Hello!

I seem to be experiencing some gesture jank as well. Double tap (which I have set to Undo) has varying degrees of success; the 150ms interval I have set works fine on the legacy screen but not the new one. I have noticed that some elements of the card seem to be getting in the way, in that if I tap the background the gesture seems to work marginally better, but this isn’t a 100% remedy. Swipe gestures are also broken in this same situation - I have to find a tiny chunk of space that isn’t occupied by a button or an AMBOSS preview, and even then it can be hit or miss. Special card elements didn’t interfere with gesture functionality before, so I’m chalking it up to the new screen.

Otherwise, it looks and works great, and the hard work is very appreciated!
