I’m considering uploading the current questions for the Polish driver’s license theory exam in deck form, but I’m worried about the size when including media. (The questions are publicly available but they’re in the form of an .xlsx and zip files containing .wmv videos).
After some reencoding with ffmpeg I’ve managed to get the size of the media down to just a bit under 2 GB, but I worry that that’s still too large. For now, I’ve been using the deck on a second unsynchronised profile to make sure that’s not an issue.
That said, I think this deck would be useful for other people trying to get a driver’s license. Would such a deck be acceptable to share on AnkiWeb? If not, is there a threshold I should aim for before I consider sharing?
edit: To be more precise, I’ve managed to compress it down to about 1.6GB so far.
The file size limit for shared decks on AnkiWeb is probably around 150 MB, so if your deck is larger than that, you’ll need to split it up. In such cases I think it’s common practice to avoid using AnkiWeb and instead use a service like Google Drive to distribute the decks directly within each learning community.
When distributing decks I recommend being mindful of content copyrights. Redistributing copyrighted content may be illegal, and the distributor bears responsibility for any such violations. To distribute such decks legally only use content that has been authorized for redistribution or content covered by fair use. (it depends on the content and the laws of your country.)
If the copyright status is unclear it’s common practice to share the deck only within closed communities like with friends or at school, rather than distributing it publicly on platforms like AnkiWeb or community forums. (e.g. if you create a deck based on a school textbook distributing it online could cause problems, but if it is limited to within the school all users have purchased the textbook, so it very rarely becomes an issue.)
