> A bit unrelated. I woke up this morning to this amount of interday (re)learning cards [image] Those are my new learning steps. [image] The reason why I am using a 1s again learning step is that it shows me the card I failed, RIGHT after the next card it shows to test myself again and see if I get it right. If I get the next card failed, then I am cycling between just 2 cards until I get one of them right the next time. This helps with my cognitive overload by learning one thing at a time. …

Here is a rough sketch of my situation:

 ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex002/uploads/anki2/original/3X/f/b/fbab80f2c7341334f3dfa4afee03e3ccf7fa32ce.png)

Green are interday learning cards (This problem does not occur with fresh new-turned-into-learning cards). Provided that there is a backlog of interday learning card (lets say 20 cards), the reviewer would continue to cycle through all of these 20 cards and then back to the beginning, with no regard to how short the again interval. I sense it follows a queue.

This is cumbersome and very exhausting, and cognitive load skyrockets for you trying to work 20 cards at a single time.

The reason for my weird 1s learning step is that **it makes you cycle only between a maximum of 2 failed cards a time until you get one of them right for you to progress; this helps with the cognitive load**.

Can you post your card info? I think in the case of interday cards they are considered review cards so that’s where the issue lies.

It is hard for me to know which rated card was an interday card

* * *

Here is a shot in the dark. I dont know if this really was an interday card:

</div>

~~It’s not. See the dates.~~

It might be a interday card. The initial review happened at around midnight. Then you did it around noon at 1PM. It doesn’t have the problem you mentioned but it has some other weird issue.

Look at the 5th review. It’s 0 seconds interval. What? Do you know what’s going on?

I think I tried changing my again interval there which did not work, so I returned it back to normal

Btw my next day starts at 1 AM, so it probably was an interday card.

* * *

Yeah as you can see, I began by rating it as again. The 1 second interval is overridden by the other interday cards so I was kept in some vicious hell cycle, where my again interval, in which my first card should have been shown in, was not regarded for at all.

Under no conditions that should create a 0 second interval though. I suggest you quote this post in the Beta thread.

As for the other problem you said in the original post, it doesn’t seem to appear here.

Yeah. I dont believe I had amnesia (maybe ❓ ❓ ❓ ❓) but interday cards have always behaved normally up until this point (unless I really was oblivious to something…somehow)

So today is a new day, and I am experiencing the same learning card backlog death cycle, regardless of how small my again interval is. I have tried mixing interday cards with review cards to lessen the pain.

I want to think that the reason behind this death cycle is that too many learning cards have had the same again interval pressed for them, so they all show up at the same time.

It seems irrelevant how “fresh” I have used the “Again” interval, so long as many other cards waiting have had “again” as their last button pressed, however fresh or stale they may be.

@Expertium Is this a correct explanation of what is going on. Was this an old behaviour of Anki ❓

I am looking to keep it “fresh”.

I don’t know what started you on the idea that you’re dealing with interday learning cards here, but I don’t see anything that suggests you are. To be “interday” it is not enough just to be leftover in Learn from yesterday – the interval needs to cross the day boundary and be converted to 1d. That’s not what is showing up in your Card Info.

These are regular short-interval Learn cards, which you didn’t graduate to Review the day before, so they are now overdue. These “0 seconds” cards you’re concerned about are most likely 1s cards with fuzz applied – it’s a tiny step, with a tiny amount of fuzz, and rounding.

Your idea to flip between 2 cards until you get them is the opposite of what spaced repetition is designed to do. Anki will still do it for you, but I expect you’re only going to see the result you want if you only have 2 cards ready to study in Learn. Those 2 cards on their tiny intervals will always push to the front of the queue.

Once you have 20 Learn cards stacked up, you’re going to see them in the order that they finished their intervals – with fuzz applied to make sure you don’t see them in the same order all the time.

Other factors I’m not considering –

- You’re changing your learning steps while you have cards in Learn, which you should expect to result in skipped or repeated learning steps while those cards adjust.
- You’re using a beta version that has scheduling changes. But this behavior looks exactly how it always has, so I don’t have reason to think those changes are having any impact here.

Okay, this explains it 😅 I take it there is no way around this to make 20 learn cards like 2 cards cycling, because they are all learning…Perhaps the smart fuzz has something to do with it as well.

But thank you anyway 🙏

Normal fuzz chooses the interval randomly and uniformly, so every interval in that range has the same probability of being chosen. Smart fuzz makes shorter intervals slightly more likely, bu more importantly, it checks how many due cards you have on each of the future dates corresponding to these intervals, and that affects the probability.
