There is no problem to create such addon - question is if you are able to to pay for API/token access to LLM?
AnkiDroid now has official icons for the answer buttons!
It’s even better with the new awesome feedback feature!
This is good. (Space between them plus the color change.)
I’d also put the check marks prior to (or centered above) the words, like shown in the latest post by “ZornHadNoChoice”. Although, I’d keep all the checkmarks as green in color. So, would be an X, a small check mark, a larger check mark, and then two ckeck marks. Or could make it a red X, one green check mark, two green check marks, and three green check marks.
I would also just change the word “Again” to “Incorrect”, because that’s a more accurate description.
As far as I know the same thing is often said about gamification, when users make mistakesand are punished their motivation declines. In education punishment only works when the educator is watching, leaders learn how to avoid punishment and surveillance, so I think it might be more effective for learning to avoid negative expressions like “wrong”, “forgot”, “
”, or “incorrect”.
I think the flash might be a bit annoying. I think just having the symbols somewhere on the button may clarify (e.g. red X, one green check mark, two green check marks, and three green check marks)
It may be difficult to get the balance right, because it still needs to also be clearly defined. Maybe a word like “mistake” might be more neutral?
Make the second hard in a row a fail. It means that maybe I do remember but not at this moment so give it another try later before relearning. That is what I do now. It seems better than previous system and I have not noticed problems.
I made a PR to add colored button borders
EDIT: I closed it, here’s a new PR by a different person FEAT/ADD: colored answer buttons (with option to disable them) by GithubAnon0000 · Pull Request #4371 · ankitects/anki · GitHub
Hi ![]()
Have you considered renaming the button “Hard” to a more positive word like “Accepted”?
I’m not sure this endless discussion is productive, but here’s one more possible approach: use adverbs instead of adjectives.
Easy → Easily
Hard → Barely
“Barely” conveys the notion of success with difficulty.
I read a lot of discussions about solving “Hard” button misuse problem. A lot of participants suggested changing the button visually, adding icons or hiding the button completely. I think we should seriously think of renaming the button.
Stage 1 hypertension was once named “mild hypertension”, but that falsely implied low risk. Some patients said “My doctor told me I had high blood pressure, he also told me that my hypertension is mild, so I don’t need to worry about it”. That was one of the reasons why classification changed from “mild/moderate/severe” to “stage 1/stage 2/stage 3” hypertension.
I think Hard button must be renamed to a more positive word that implies it is a pass grade. Maybe change it into “Accepted” , “Barely” or “Hesitated”. Do you agree?
I don’t personally agree with “accepted” and don’t think “hesitated” conveys all the times when the button should be pressed (see Studying - Anki Manual).
Anyways, as I was trying to tell you on github the other day, the topic I linked to you also includes renaming discussions. E.g. here is a section with some discussions about it:
(read a bit further than just this one post, you’ll find several discussions about renaming)
That is a great example of the power that language has in regard to our behavior. And it’s a great way to support your argument. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, and there has been development going on already. For some reason a color solution was implemented, which I then took over and made it optional:
We are currently waiting for another PR, though, as the reviewer screen is being ported to svelte. Afterwards, this colored button solution will be implemented next (I’ll update my PR) and new users will start with the colored buttons with the option to switch them off.
Hear me out. Colorless options that efficiently use space. Can be colored anyhow, but both hard and easy must be more muted.
I know there is ongoing discussion, but I only found suggestions to rename “again” button, while almost no one suggested to rename “Hard” button to a more accurate word. Almost everybody is suggesting visual hints. I thought renaming deserves a separate topic, not be merged into this topic, to discuss the most accurate word to represent the button.
Visual hints are not guaranteed to be understood by everyone in the same way. Green and red borders might look the same for a color-blind person, who will not see the hint you are trying to show. Instead of visual hints why can’t we just select a better word?
I merged this in because it’s another idea to solve the same problem. Better to discuss it here than in a separate thread.
