Help restoring my media:(

The only effect safe mode has on syncing is to stop it from happening automatically on open/close. But safe mode also keeps your add-ons from running – was that the cause of the error? I suppose another option is to turn off auto-sync, and then restart Anki, so you can log out/log in again to sync before you sync manually.

But it looks like you synced successfully now, because that now exists on the server.

If that worked, you can now sync again with each of your Android devices. Once all devices are in sync – and all media is finished syncing – you can circle back and clean up your unused media, so you don’t have 5+ GB of unnecessary media to struggle with between your devices.

Hey! i already sync my devices and apparently its all there:). just one more question, every time i close anki in pc it says syncing media and then this message appears for 2 seconds before the program shuts down. Although it appears that my new reviews do get sync in the new devices. Is it something to worry about?

I’m glad it appears to be working. You still haven’t clean up your unused media from the server. Please take care of that.

Then you can try to deal with that error. Start with the Troubleshooting Checklist – especially #4 and #2.

Hi! I already delete the unused files but i think they’re not syncing cause of the error of “Please sync again. If this message keeps appearing, please post on the support site.” and i still have the unused files in my pc

If files you deleted are coming back, it sounds like you deleted the media before your devices were in sync, and sync is restoring those files for you. You’ll need to keep syncing until everything matches on your devices, and then you can work on deleting the media..

Okay so i dont know whats happening but im trying to sync my tablet and my phone like you said but it always says “media sync failed” although i do have my pictures in my decks.

  1. Have the missing images been restored on all devices?
  2. Which of your devices now show errors during sync?
  3. Have you tried checking the database?
  4. Are there any unsynced edits or card reviews on any of the devices? If not, you can try a one-way sync from a device that doesn’t have a problem, uploading the collection to the cloud, and then one-way sync on the other devices, downloading the collection there.

  1. Yes

  2. Only my pc sow the error “Please sync again. If this message keeps appearing, please post on the support site.”

  3. Yes, i checked it but nothing changes

  4. I just tried that, i deleted the unused media files in my tablet and one-way synced to ankiweb and once it finished the sync the 19000 unused files reappeared. :frowning:

Just to make sure, you chose to “upload to AnkiWeb” instead of “download from AnkiWeb” during one-way sync on the tablet after cleaning up files locally, right?
One more thing to try, I guess, is to make a fresh profile in the desktop app and one-way sync it (download from) the same AnkiWeb account, to see if the error persists. Or maybe even try a clean app install?

When I force the one-way sync I tried both options (Keeping the ankidroid info and keeping the ankiweb one) and both end up restoring all my unused files.

If I delete anki from my pc and reinstall it from zero how do I prevent my media from disappearing?

If keeping the ankidroid info during one-way sync restores deleted files, that doesn’t sound right at all. Could you list the order of steps you took to delete the files and sync, and at what points and how do you verify the existence/absence of the files?

You can use FileExport to save all your Anki data in a single file. Choose Anki Collection Package as a format and tick Include media. This will create a backup that can be used to completely restore all your cards, media, and study progress on any other Anki install anywhere (using similarly FileImport).
But you don’t have to delete the current Anki to install a new one in the first place. You can install several of them in parallel (at least that’s how it worked with the old installer, I haven’t got to testing the new one myself yet). To change the new Anki data folder (so that it won’t keep referencing the same folder as the current one), you can use the -b attribute, as instructed here: Managing Files - Anki Manual

I think I have read from a post by Danika_Dakika that that might be expected; essentially, the media sync needs to finish first, only then can unused files be deleted locally. Otherwise, the sync thinks that the media hasn’t been synced yet and simply restores it from the server.

One-way sync though? It isn’t supposed to download anything from the server.
