Hands-free SRS with voice ratings / Hands-free-SRS mit Sprachbewertung

Hands-free SRS with voice ratings / Hands-free-SRS mit Sprachbewertung

:germany: Deutsch

Hallo AnkiDroid-Team,

Was bereits sehr gut funktioniert

Wichtigster fehlender Punkt: echte SRS-Bewertung ohne Handybedienung

1 = Einfach
2 = Gut
3 = Schwer
4 = Nochmal

Beim Laufen muss man dadurch kaum überlegen.

Pause/Fortsetzen über Bluetooth-Kopfhörer

Ein weiterer wichtiger Punkt für echtes Hands-free-Lernen ist eine Pausefunktion über die Play-/Pause-Taste eines Bluetooth-Kopfhörers.

Beim Laufen muss man manchmal kurzfristig stoppen – z.

Hello AnkiDroid team,

I would like to suggest a concrete improvement for a true hands-free learning mode.

So far, I have learned around 3,500 vocabulary items almost exclusively through self-recorded audio files. For me, audio learning while running is the most efficient and least time-consuming way to study.

However, my existing audio files have two major disadvantages:

  1. Vocabulary is always played in the same fixed order.

  2. There is no SRS – words I forget or only partly remember are not automatically shown again sooner.

That is why I started testing AnkiDroid.

What already works very well

In the old reviewer, the hands-free workflow now works surprisingly well for me:

  • German and Spanish TTS

  • random card order

  • mixed German → Spanish and Spanish → German directions

  • configurable thinking time

  • automatic answer reveal

  • automatic advance to the next card

In the new reviewer, this TTS/auto-advance workflow does not work at all for me, so I am currently using the old reviewer.

Most important missing feature: real SRS rating without touching the phone

The biggest limitation right now is this:

With automatic advance, a fixed rating has to be selected, for example always “Good”.

Therefore AnkiDroid cannot know whether I actually knew the vocabulary item or not. This removes the main benefit of SRS/FSRS.

I am aware that general voice commands have already been discussed in the past. However, my proposal is intentionally much simpler and more limited:

AnkiDroid would not need to understand my Spanish answer or automatically evaluate my pronunciation.

After the correct answer has been read aloud, the microphone would simply open for a few seconds.

The learner only says:

1 = Easy
2 = Good
3 = Hard
4 = Again

AnkiDroid would then trigger the corresponding existing rating action.

The desired workflow would be:

Question via TTS → thinking time → learner answers aloud for themselves → correct answer via TTS → microphone opens briefly → learner says 1, 2, 3 or 4 → SRS/FSRS uses that rating → next random vocabulary item

Recognizing four numbers should be much simpler and more reliable than automatically evaluating a spoken foreign-language answer.

This is especially important for language learners whose pronunciation may not yet be perfect.

The order 1–4 is intentional:

1 = Easy will probably be the most common rating. The more difficult the card was, the higher the number. This makes the system very intuitive while running.

Pause/resume via Bluetooth headphones

Another important feature for true hands-free learning would be support for the Play/Pause button on Bluetooth headphones.

While running, it is sometimes necessary to pause immediately – for example at a road crossing or when talking to someone.

At the moment, AnkiDroid does not react to the Play/Pause button of my Bluetooth headphones.

Ideally:

Bluetooth Play/Pause = pause/resume automatic advance

This would avoid having to take the phone out every time.

I am aware that pausing/toggling Auto Advance has already been discussed. For a real hands-free mode, direct support for normal Bluetooth media buttons would be especially useful.

Keep related cards together

Another useful feature would be the ability to mark related cards as belonging together.

In my case, a vocabulary item often has an additional form or one or more example sentences.

For example:

  • 3.0 = avisar

  • 3.1 = avísame

  • 3.2 = Avísame cuando tengas tiempo.

  • possibly 3.3 = another example sentence

These cards should be markable as one related sequence.

If vocabulary item 3.0 is selected randomly, then 3.1, 3.2 and optionally 3.3 should follow immediately.

After that, the next random vocabulary item should be selected.

It does not matter whether that next vocabulary item consists of only one card or itself belongs to another group.

The example sentence is not just additional material. It shows the concrete context in which the vocabulary item is used and makes its meaning, typical usage and sentence structure easier to understand. This often makes the vocabulary item much easier to remember and use correctly later.

For audio learning, it would therefore be especially useful if a vocabulary item and its directly related forms or example sentences could be played directly one after another.

I know there have already been discussions about related/grouped cards. My use case is specifically for audio learning: a randomly selected vocabulary item should immediately be followed by its directly associated cards.

Why I think this would be very useful

AnkiDroid already has most of the necessary building blocks:

  • TTS

  • automatic advance

  • random card order

  • multiple review directions

  • SRS/FSRS

  • microphone functionality

  • existing rating actions

  • keyboard/controller actions

What is mainly missing is the connection between these existing features in a complete hands-free workflow.

With

voice rating 1–4 + Bluetooth pause/resume + optional grouping of related cards

AnkiDroid would, in my opinion, become an excellent tool for true hands-free SRS learning while running, walking or commuting.

Thank you for developing AnkiDroid and for considering this suggestion.

This functionality is unlikely to be implemented. See –

1 = Einfach
2 = Gut
3 = Schwer
4 = Nochmal

Vielen Dank!

Thank you for your reply.

I would like to clarify one point more precisely:

Regarding speech input, I am not asking for general voice control of AnkiDroid, and I am not asking Anki to understand or evaluate my foreign-language answer or pronunciation.

My request is only about SRS/FSRS rating in hands-free mode.

After the correct answer is read aloud, AnkiDroid would only need to open the microphone briefly and recognize exactly one of four numbers:

1 = Easy
2 = Good
3 = Hard
4 = Again

Nothing more would be required from speech recognition. The recognized number would simply trigger the corresponding existing rating action. This connection between hands-free learning and SRS/FSRS is the most important point for me.

Independently of that, I am still interested in the two other suggestions:

  • Pause/resume Auto Advance via the Play/Pause button on Bluetooth headphones

  • Grouping related cards, so that for example a vocabulary item, an additional form and an example sentence can be played directly one after another

These two points were not addressed in the previous reply.

Thank you!

The statement from the devs applies pretty broadly to “hands-free” use.

The much more common solution for folks who want to be audio-only or screen-free when studying (which is all your use case of running seems to require) is to use a small wireless remote to interact with the app. That would require no code changes, and is something you should look into.

I doubt that toggling Auto Advance qualifies as something a Bluetooth or Android device would view as a play/pause action for media-control purposes.

If there’s any chance of it working, I think you’d probably have to set up your Bluetooth device to function as a controller in AnkiDroid, with toggle Auto Advance tied to a button. If your device will do it – that’s already supported. If it won’t – see the suggestion above about using an actual controller.

You already have adequate functionality to control the order that New cards are introduced – Deck Options - Anki Manual .

You shouldn’t study Review cards in a set order. Can I study my cards in a particular order? - Anki FAQs

And if you have multiple audio forms on the same card, they will already all be played.

Although I think it’s unlikely this request will be taken up, I’m going to point out the issues here.

  • Easy should definitely not be your most common rating – Studying - Anki Manual .
  • Your numbering is the reverse of the standard keyboard shortcuts for the grades, and of how those grades are coded in the system – 1-Again, 2-Hard, 3-Good, 4-Easy. That seems almost deliberately confusing.

Vielen Dank für die ausführliche Antwort.

Ich möchte meinen Wunsch noch einmal kurz und klar auf zwei Punkte reduzieren:

Für die SRS-/FSRS-Bewertung brauche ich keine allgemeine Sprachsteuerung. Ich muss lediglich „1“, „2“, „3“ oder „4“ sagen können, damit AnkiDroid die entsprechende Selbstbewertung ausführt:

1 = Nochmal
2 = Schwer
3 = Gut
4 = Einfach

Mehr soll die Spracherkennung nicht können.

Der zweite Punkt betrifft die Beispielsätze. Ich möchte nicht alle Karten in einer festen Reihenfolge lernen.

Es geht nur um einzelne schwierige Vokabeln, die ich mir schlecht merken kann. Für genau diese Vokabeln brauche ich einen oder mehrere Beispielsätze, die direkt danach kommen müssen.

Der Ablauf sollte dann z. B. so aussehen:

Vielen Dank!

English

Thank you for your detailed reply.

I would like to reduce my request to just two points and explain them as clearly as possible.

For SRS/FSRS rating, I do not need general voice control. I only need to be able to say “1”, “2”, “3” or “4”, and AnkiDroid should use that number for the corresponding self-rating:

1 = Again
2 = Hard
3 = Good
4 = Easy

Speech recognition would not need to do anything else.

The second point concerns example sentences. I do not want all cards to follow a fixed order.

This is only about individual difficult vocabulary items that I struggle to remember. For exactly those items, I need one or more example sentences to follow immediately afterwards.

The sequence should then look like this:

difficult vocabulary item → immediately example sentence 1 → possibly example sentence 2 → then another random vocabulary item

The example sentence needs to come directly after the vocabulary item because its purpose is to help me understand and remember that specific word in context. If it appears randomly much later, that connection is lost.

All other vocabulary items can continue to appear randomly as usual.

These are the two functions that would be essential for my hands-free learning workflow with SRS/FSRS.

Thank you!

I believe I addressed those points in my earlier response(s) – Hands-free SRS with voice ratings / Hands-free-SRS mit Sprachbewertung - #4 by Danika_Dakika – but I’ll be as clear as I can.

  1. You will not get support for a “hands-free learning workflow” in AnkiDroid. That’s goes against a long-standing ethical position of the primary developers (linked in my first response). You should let this go and consider alternative approaches.

  2. You will not get functionality that strings together a series of cards, so you can study them in order. But if what you want is to have a series of audio files play when you’re studying a single card – that’s already supported. Anki will play all the media in all the fields you include in your card template.
