See the suggested solutions above.
But because this thread is getting long, Iāll summarize ā
- Uninstall Anki through your Windows system.
- If anything is still at either of these program locations ā Managing Files - Anki Manual ā delete those folders.
- If you installed somewhere other than the default location, you can right-click on any shortcut to Anki and āOpen file locationā (which may be inside āPropertiesā).
- Your user data is stored separately from the program, so as long as you donāt delete that, your collection will be fine.
- Go to Anki - powerful, intelligent flashcards to download and install the new release.
I kept having the same issue - opened the Anki file location and it was under Programs but there was no other āAnkiā there.
Instead of going into the program folders go into your PC folders under āthis PCā > āOSā and search āankiā
I started deleting any anki-related folder older than 2026 and every so often I would re-open Anki until I could actually open it and wasnāt getting the error
The Windows startup issue should be fixed in 26.09.2:
Be careful not to delete Anki2 ā which is where your collection, media, add-ons, and other settings are stored!
Is this patch intended to be a ājust run this one, donāt worry about deleting anything else, doesnāt matter what version you are coming fromā install? ![]()
Normally yes, it should automatically uninstall an existing version, as long as itās 2.1.64 or later. If the uninstall fails for any reason (for example if the old uninstall.exe file is missing as itās the case for some users) installation will proceed normally and some old files might stay in the same folder, but should no longer cause issues.
Strangely, it was this recent 26.09.2 patch that for me caused the errors on startup that have been posted in this thread. I ended up finding multiple entries for Anki in the list of installed apps in Windows settings, one for each of the last three versions, and after deleting the old ones it let me start up Anki again.
Perfect thanks !
Mine did the same thing, so I uninstalled then installed the new version, which worked. But now anki is running ridiculously slow -_-
And itās repeatedly crashing now. Tried the whole install process again and it didnāt help at all. Not impressed with the new update at all. Iām going to have to use my phone until this junk gets fixed.
A new version of the app can interact with a lot of different things on your system, especially when it has significant security fixes, like the last few releases. If youāre having other issues besides trouble installing, those need to be addressed separately, and reported if they havenāt already been.
You should start by trying everything on the Troubleshooting Checklist, including things you donāt think are related. If that doesnāt point to a solution, it will at least help you narrow down the issue. Then browse/search threads from the past few days (e.g., 26.09 Performance Issues ) to see if any of them are similar to what youāre seeing.
