Audio quality changes wildly on a card by card basis

Just purchased an iphone 17 today an got Anki mobile. On my old phone with ankidroid(Nothing Phone 2, if that matters), the audio on cards were all equalized and of the same volume when they auto play. On Anki mobile, the bass is arbitrarily being pulled from some audio clips and with other cards, the volume is lower and now some of them even sound mono.

One card will be plenty loud and full of bass, then the next card (in many cases I’m using clips of audio from the same source so they should be identical in quality) the bass dissapears and the volume is reduced. This is pretty jarring and I don’t know if this is an issue with the hardware or the app. I’m not too suspicious of the hardware being the problem itself since everywhere else on the phone, audio is a non issue. Am I crazy? I use anki a lot and I’d hate to have to return the entire phone over this one nagging issue.

AnkiMobile uses iOS’s media playing utilities to play audio files, and does not handle the audio itself. It’s not clear from your report whether iOS is failing to play the audio files ‘correctly’, or your previous device was doing extra processing like EQ and normalization. If you still have access to the old phone, I’d suggest doing some experiments to see if your memory of how it used to sound actually matches, and if so, try to identify a pattern in the problem files. If you have access to a computer, you may be then be able to use a bulk-encoding program to re-encode/normalize your files into something iOS plays more to your liking.
